German Language Teaching from the Perspective of Students at a Selected School on the Austrian Border.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the perspectives of pupils in a selected secondary school on the teaching of German in the Austrian border region. In the theoretical part, the language policy of the European Union, which emphasizes the promotion of multilingualism and the teaching of foreign languages, is presented. Subsequently, the specific language policy of the Czech Republic is presented. In the following chapters, the Framework Educational Programme (FEP) is described in detail from its introduction, its characteristics, contents and objectives, to the specifics of the FEP for Economics and Business, especially in the area of foreign language teaching. It also describes multilingualism as a concept, the related status of German as a second foreign language and its teaching in Czech schools. The last chapter is devoted to attitudes, their definition, characteristics and function. The practical part presents the research methodology and the results of the research investigation. The aim of the thesis was to find out what view pupils have on the teaching of German, to reveal their attitudes towards learning this language in the context of a situation where German is taught as a second foreign language after English. At the same time, the aim was to find out how and if pupils perceive the proximity of the Austrian border and whether this geographical location has any influence on their attitudes towards learning German. Also presented are their ideas and suggestions for making learning more attractive to them, which from their perspective includes in particular the possibility of going abroad, whether for short trips or longer language learning stays. 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted as part of the research. The results indicate that although only about half of the pupils chose German as a second foreign language when they chose it in primary school and showed a rather negative attitude towards it at that time, a rather positive attitude prevails in secondary school. This change in attitudes during the transition from primary to secondary school is mainly due to an awareness of the proximity of the Austrian border and the benefits that this geographical location brings. The teacher himself is also an important factor influencing attitudes towards German teaching. Pupils also have a concrete idea of what teaching should look like in order to make it more attractive to them and can identify shortcomings as well as positive aspects of teaching. The results of my work should provide insight into the perception of teaching from the perspective of secondary school pupils near the Austrian border.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání pohledů žáků a žákyň vybrané střední školy na výuku němčiny v rakouském příhraničí. V teoretické části je představena jazyková politika Evropské unie, která klade důraz na podporu mnohojazyčnosti a výuku cizích jazyků. Následně je představena specifická jazyková politika České republiky. V dalších kapitolách je detailně popsán Rámcový vzdělávací program (RVP) od jeho zavedení, jeho charakteristiky, obsahy a cíle, až po specifika RVP pro obor Ekonomika a podnikání, zejména v oblasti cizojazyčné výuky. Dále je popsána mnohojazyčnost jako koncept, s ním související postavení němčiny jako druhého cizího jazyka a jeho výuka na českých školách. Poslední kapitola je věnována postojům, jejich definici, charakteristice a funkci. V praktické části je představena metodologie výzkumu a výsledky výzkumného šetření. Cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit, jaký pohled mají žáci a žákyně na výuku němčiny, odhalit jejich postoj k učení se tomuto jazyku v kontextu situace, kdy je němčina vyučována až jako druhý cizí jazyk po angličtině. Zároveň bylo cílem zjistit, jak a jestli vůbec žáci a žákyně vnímají blízkost rakouských hranic a jestli tato geografická poloha nějak ovlivňuje jejich postoje k učení se němčiny. Také jsou představeny jejich představy a návrhy výuky, aby se pro ně stala atraktivnější, což z jejich pohledu zahrnuje především možnost výjezdu do zahraničí, ať už krátkodobých výletů nebo dlouhodobějších jazykových pobytů. V rámci výzkumného šetření bylo provedeno 12 polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Výsledky naznačují, že i přesto, že jen asi polovina žáků zvolila němčinu jako druhý cizí jazyk v době výběru tohoto jazyka na základní škole a projevovala k němu tehdy spíše negativní postoj, na střední škole již převládá postoj spíše pozitivní. Tato změna postojů při přechodu ze základní školy na střední školu je především důsledkem uvědomění si blízkosti rakouských hranic a přínosů, které tato geografická poloha přináší. Důležitým faktorem ovlivňujícím postoj k výuce němčiny je rovněž samotný učitel. Žáci také mají konkrétní představu o tom, jak by měla výuka vypadat, aby byla pro ně atraktivnější, a dokáží identifikovat nedostatky i pozitivní aspekty výuky. Výsledky mé práce by měly být náhledem na vnímání výuky z perspektivy žáků střední školy v blízkosti rakouských hranic.
