Czech accent in English: Linguistics and biometric speech technologies

The dissertation deals with the closely related phenomena of glottalization, linking and voicing assimilation at word boundaries in Czech, the closely related Slovak and in German, which historically had a strong influence on Czech. The standard pronunciation of all three languages differs in the way they treat these phenomena, moreover, there are differences between individual dialects which are insufficiently described in the literature and empirically tested. Nevertheless, there differences probably play a role in the acquisition of English pronunciation by native speakers of these languages, since English uses these phenomena in yet another way. The dissertation combines empirical phonetic research with phonological analysis, and the points of view of contrastive linguistics and second language acquisition.

Abstract:

This dissertation combines the points of view of linguistics and biometric speech technologies to examine the topic of Czech accent in English. It summarizes some common challenges in foreign-accent rating experiments, it presents the creation of an extensive multilingual data set, and explains the data set's use in a complex foreign-accent rating experiment. The results of the accent rating experiment show that the definition of the rating task can be used to direct raters' attention to distinguish more categorically native speakers from non-native speakers by instructing listeners to rate their confidence about their perception of an accent rather than rating accent strength itself. Furthermore, it turned out that non-native speakers who in high-quality recordings receive accent ratings similar to those of native speakers also group with native speakers when it comes to accent ratings in adverse listening conditions. The results also show that raters' familiarity with native accents of English can be a predictor of confidence ratings but not of accent-strength ratings, and the data analysis confirms the earlier finding that native language match between raters and speakers lowers accentedness scores. The chapter dedicated to biometric speech technologies identifies recording quality as the main predictor of the accuracy of automatic language identification and automatic speaker recognition. It shows that native language and foreign accent ratings do not necessarily correlate with language identification scores but they can be predictors of speaker identification scores when recording quality is factored out.

Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce se zabývá tématem českého přízvuku v angličtině z pohledu lingvistiky a biometrických řečových technologií. Práce shrnuje některé běžné problémy v experimentech na hodnocení cizího přízvuku a popisuje vytvoření rozsáhlého vícejazyčného datasetu a vysvětluje, jak byl dataset použit v komplexním experimentu na hodnocení cizího přízvuku. Výsledky experimentu na hodnocení přízvuku ukazují, že definice úkolu hodnocení přízvuku může být využita k nasměrování pozornosti hodnotitelů tak, aby byli více schopni kategoricky rozeznávat rodilé mluvčí od nerodilých mluvčích. Toho je dosaženo tím, že hodnotitelé jsou instruování, aby hodnotili míru své jistoty, že mluvčí má cizí přízvuk, spíše než aby hodnotili sílu přízvuku samotného. Dalším zjištěním práce je, že nerodilí mluvčí, kteří dostávají podobné hodnocení přízvuku jako rodilí mluvčí v nahrávkách o vysoké kvalitě, jsou podobně hodnoceni i v tzv. ztížených poslechových podmínkách. Výsledky práce také ukazují, že znalost rodilých přízvuků v angličtině může být u hodnotitelů prediktorem jejich hodnocení jistoty, s jakou rozpoznali cizí přízvuk, ale nikoliv hodnocení síly přízvuku. Analýza dat potvrzuje dřívější zjištění, že shoda rodného jazyka mezi hodnotiteli a mluvčími vede k nižším hodnotám při hodnocení přízvuku. Kapitola věnovaná biometrickým řečovým technologiím identifikuje kvalitu nahrávek jako hlavní prediktor přesnosti automatické identifikace jazyka a automatického rozpoznání řečníka. Ukazuje, že rodný jazyk a hodnocení cizího přízvuku nutně nekorelují se skóre identifikace jazyka, ale mohou predikovat skóre rozpoznání řečníka, pokud se vyloučí vliv kvality nahrávek.
