The Sickness May Be Mine but the Tragedy is Theirs. Neoformalist Analysis of the film Third Star

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce se věnuje neoformalistické analýze debutového celovečerního britského filmu Third Star (2010) režisérky Hattie Dalton. Hlavním cílem práce bylo zjištění, zda a jakým způsobem se jmenované dílo liší od snímků s podobnou tématikou, tedy na příběhy o smrtelně nemocném hlavním hrdinovi. K možnosti analýzy bylo zapotřebí si charakterizovat kategorie filmů s touto tematikou (romantické, komediální a rodinné drama). Na základě tohoto členění jsem mohla určit typické prvky, které snímek zařadilo do skupiny komediálních dramat. Dále analýzou stylu jsme zjistila, že je snímek vystaven jak klasickou narací, tak uměleckou. Druhé zmiňované z toho důvodu, že je stylistickými prostředky kladen velký důraz na expresivní realismus, díky kterému je umocněn vztah mezi stylem a narací. Ten je umocňován stylistickými prostředky, které se v jiných podobných filmech nevyskytují.

Abstract:

The bachelor diploma thesis deals with the neoformalistic analysis of British film Third Star (2010) by Hattie Dalton. Her job was to find out whether and how this mentioned movie differs from similarly-themed pictures such as the stories of the deadly hero. In addition, it was necessary to define and capture the films that narrate the subject. I split the pictures into three categories: romantic drama, comedy drama and family drama. I categorized each group and drew it closer to smaller analyses of the works that fall into that category. With a thorough analysis of Third Star, I found the film to be a comedy drama. The slide ends in closed. Its narrative construction falls into both classical structure and art narratives. The second is because stylistic means put a great emphasis on expressive realism, which enhances the relationship between style and narration. Expensive realism brings us to the psychic state of the main character, James, who fights with cancer at the last stage. It is precisely because of the use of these artistic elements that it differs from other frames in all categories, making it unique
