Satanism in black metal

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá satanismem v black metalu. V případě black metalu se jedná o odnož extrémní metalu, kde téma satanismu hraje již od je počátků důležitou roli. To je patrné jak v textech, tak i v image těchto hudebních skupin. Povaha satanismu v black metalu je však považována za diskutabilní a tento satanismus je často označován (a to i samotnými hudebníky) za určitou formu pózy. Členy blackmetalových skupin a jejich příznivce tedy nelze explicitně ztotožňovat se satanismem, na druhé straně však existuje také část blackmetalové scény, která se k satanismu aktivně hlásí. Někteří blackmetalisté se inspirují satanismem Antona LaVeye nebo mají vlastní (někdy i teistické) koncepce. Od druhé vlny skandinávského black metalu na počátku 90. let 20. století lze označit black metal za hudebně-ideový proud, kde jsou společně sdílenými ideovými rámci opozice vůči křesťanství (či náboženství obecně) a misantropie. Vedle satanského vyjádření začala v protikřesťanské rétorice část scény v první polovině 90. let 20. století používat také odkazování se na pohanství, přičemž u některých skupin tato orientace původní satanská témata zcela nahradila. V této době také dochází k příklonu části blackmetalové scény ke krajně pravicovým ideologiím, což se v současnosti projevuje zejména v post-komunistických zemích. Práce s ohledem na uvedené téma reflektuje vývoj blackmetalové subkultury, přičemž zohledňuje klíčové fáze a hudební skupiny, které se na utváření tohoto hudebního stylu výrazně podílely. Součástí práce je také prezentace výsledků vlastního terénního výzkumu. Tento výzkum se zabýval tím, jakým způsobem se k satanismu, k pohanství a přítomnosti krajně pravicových postojů v black metalu vztahují samotní účastníci této extrémně metalové scény.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is Satanism in black metal music. Black metal is an offshoot of extreme metal, in which the topic of Satanism has played an important role from its very beginning. This is evident both in texts and in the image of black metal bands. The nature of Satanism in black metal, however, is considered debatable, and it is often refered to as a form of posturing even by the musicians themselves. Even though not all the black metal bands can be explicitly identified with Satanism, there is a considerable number of musicians and their supporters who openly declare their allegiance to it. Some of them are inspired by LaVeyan Satanism or have their own (sometimes even theistic) concepts. Since the second phase of Scandinavian black metal in the early 1990’s it is possible to understand black metal as a musical-ideological movement, where misanthropy and opposition to Christianity (or religion in general) form the basic ideological framework. Beside the satanic expressions, a part of the scene also started to refer to Paganism within the anti-Christian rhetoric in the first half of the 1990’s. This focus on Paganism completely replaced the original satanic topics in some bands. At that time a part of the black metal scene experienced a shift to extreme right-wing ideologies, which is currently most visible in the post-communist countries. The thesis examines the evolution of the black metal subculture, focusing on the crucial stages of its development and on the bands that most significantly contributed to the constitution of this music style. An integral part of the thesis is also a presentation of the field research findings. The research looks at the way the members of the extreme metal scene relate themselves to Satanism, Paganism, and the presence of far right-wing attitudes in black metal.
