Electrodermal complexity and its relation to convergent and divergent thinking

Abstract:

Některé současné výzkumy naznačují, že užití nelineární analýzy na klasické metody záznamu EDA může poskytnout kvalitativně nová data. S přihlédnutím k tomuto zjištění byl na 35 zdravých studentech vysoké školy proveden experiment, v jehož rámci byla řešena sada úkolů navozující konvergentní a divergentní myšlení. Během řešení úkolů byla zaznamenávána kožní vodivost (SCL), která byla posléze převedena na bodovou korelační dimenzi (PD2). Hodnoty SCL, respektive PD2 byly mezi sebou v rámci úkolů porovnány. Probandům byl také předložen dotazník STAI-S, jehož výsledky byly korelovány s hodnotami SCL a PD2 naměřenými během řešení úkolů. Jak v hodnotách SCL, tak PD2, byl na pravé ruce mezi úkoly zjištěn rozdíl, přičemž hodnoty byly vždy vyšší při konvergentním myšlení. Také byla na pravé ruce zjištěna korelace mezi výsledky STAI-S a SCL během řešení úkolů. Výstup výzkumu naznačuje, že komplexita EDA poskytuje nové informace o zapojení různých částí mozku do řešení problémů a že během konvergentního myšlení je EDA modulována více funkčními zdroji než při myšlení divergentním.

Abstract:

Some recent studies suggest that applying non linear analysis on traditional methods of EDA signal processing can offer qualitatively new data. With respect to these findings an experiment was performed on 35 healthy university students, whose goal was to solve a set of convergent and divergent thinking problems. Skin conductance level was recorded during the problem solving process. Given data were then transferred to point correlation dimension (PD2). SCL and PD2 were compared in each set of problems respectively. Subjects were also given the STAI-S questionnaire, where its results were correlated to the SCL and PD2 values gained during the experiment. Both SCL and PD2 showed significant differences between the modes of thought on right hand, where higher values were always obtained during convergent thinking. Also a correlation was uncovered between the STAI-S scores and following SCL values. The results indicate that EDA complexity provides new information about the involvement of different brain parts in problem solving and that during convergent thinking EDA is influenced by more functional sources than during divergent thinking.
