The impact of the Transition initiation ritual on the basic values of adolescent males

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá dopadem moderního iniciačního rituálu Transition na životní hodnoty dospívajících mužů. Cílem práce je prozkoumat, jak kurz Transition – vycházející ze zážitkové pedagogiky a vedený v duchu rituálů přechodu – ovlivňuje formování mužské identity a proměnu hodnotových orientací adolescentů. Teoretická část práce vymezuje klíčové koncepty spojené s vývojem identity v adolescenci, rolí iniciačních rituálů, zážitkovou pedagogikou a především Schwartzovou teorií základních lidských hodnot, která tvoří analytický rámec výzkumu. Empirická část staví na kvalitativní analýze polo-strukturovaných rozhovorů s účastníky kurzu vedených ve třech časových bodech: před kurzem, v jeho průběhu a po jeho skončení. Výsledky naznačují, že iniciační zkušenost může přispět k hlubšímu sebepoznání, stabilizaci identity a posunu v hodnotovém systému směrem k většímu sebeurčení a laskavosti.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis explores the impact of the modern initiation ritual Transition on the basic values of adolescent males. The aim of the thesis is to examine how the Transition course — grounded in experiential education and inspired by traditional rites of passage — influences the formation of masculine identity and the transformation of adolescents’ value orientations. The theoretical part of the thesis outlines key concepts related to identity development during adolescence, the role of initiation rituals, experiential education, and, most importantly, Schwartz’s theory of basic human values, which serves as the analytical framework for the research. The empirical section is based on a qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted with course participants at three time points: before the course, during its implementation, and after its completion. The findings suggest that the initiation experience may significantly contribute to deeper self-awareness, identity stabilization, and a shift in the value system toward greater self-direction and benevolence.
