Czech Tourist Guides and Travel Books as a Specific Source for Learning about Social Conditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina (the Period 1878-1918 and the Turn of the 20th and 21st Centuries)

Abstract:

Cílem práce je shromáždit a za pomoci komparativní metody obsahově zanalyzovat a vyhodnotit české turistické průvodce a cestopisy o Bosně a Hercegovině jako specifický pramen pro poznávání společenského a kulturního života této multietnické a multikonfesní země. Zkoumány budou průvodci a cestopisy ze dvou období bosenské historie: z etapy rakousko-uherské správy Bosny a Hercegoviny (1878–1918) a z období státně samostatné Bosny a Hercegoviny (1992–2023). Hlavní výzkumné otázky se zaměří na objasnění motivů a očekávání, jež ve studovaných obdobích vedly české turisty k návštěvám Bosny a Hercegoviny, na posouzení turistických průvodců a cestopisů jako zdrojů prvotní informace o komplikovaných národnostních a kulturních poměrech v Bosně a posléze na vyhodnocení názorů (obrazů), jež si čeští turisté v minulosti vytvořili, resp. v současnosti vytvářejí, o jednotlivých bosenských národnostních a náboženských skupinách na základě vlastní návštěvy země. Cílem výzkumu bude též postihnout shody a rozdíly ve vnímání bosenské reality českými turisty na přelomu 19. a 20. století a v současné době.

Abstract:

The aim of the work is to collect and, with the help of the comparative method, analyze and evaluate the content of Czech tourist guides and travel books about Bosnia and Herzegovina as a specific source for learning about the social and cultural life of this multi-ethnic and multi-confessional country. Guidebooks and travelogues from two periods of Bosnian history will be examined: from the stage of the Austro-Hungarian administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1878–1918) and from the period of independent Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992–2023). The main research questions will focus on clarifying the motives and expectations that led Czech tourists to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina in the studied periods, on the assessment of tourist guides and travelogues as sources of primary information about the complicated national and cultural conditions in Bosnia and then to evaluate the opinions (images) that Czech tourists have created in the past, or they are currently creating, about individual Bosnian national and religious groups based on their own visit to the country. The goal of the research will also be to find similarities and differences in the perception of the Bosnian reality by Czech tourists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and at the present time.
