Stylistic analysis of K. Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five

Abstract:

Anotace Tato práce analyzuje vypravěčskou perspektivu v díle Kurta Vonnuguta Jatka č.5 a stylistických prvků kterých autor využívá k uplatnění vypravěčské strategie. Teoretická část se zaměřuje na objasnění členění jazykových prostředků z hlediska jednotlivých odvětví lingvistiky a vymezení základních kategorií, do kterých lze jazykové prostředky rozčlenit z hlediska analýzy stylistických prvků ovlivňujících vypravěčův hlas. V praktické části mé práce jsem věnovala podrobné analýze typů vypravěče – ich-forma a er-forma – a analyzovala stylistické prostředky, které autor používá k vyjádření těchto dvou různých vypravěčských typů. V analýze se také snažím rozpoznat různé stylistické prostředky, které zabarvují hlavní vypravěčský hlas a jakým způsobem tyto prostředky ovlivňují vypravěče. Závěrem se snažím analyzovat jiné významné stylistické prostředky než ty, které jsou spojeny s vypravěčskou perspektivou.

Abstract:

Annotation This thesis analyses the narrative perspective in Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Slaughterhouse-Five and the stylistic means, the author employs to manipulate the narrative perspective. The theoretical part is concerned with ordering the categories into which stylistic devices might be placed from the linguistic branches point of view, and defining different linguistic means which might be used to indicate or manipulate the narrative viewpoint of a novel. In the practical part of my thesis, I have concentrated on the detailed analysis of two types of narrators – first-person and third-person narrator – and examined the stylistic means, employed to manipulate the two types of narrators. I also examine thoroughly all the stylistic means used to influence the main third-person narration and further discuss the ways in which the stylistic means influence the narrative voice. Last, I try to analyze other prominent stylistic means than those concerned with narrative strategy.
