Public Service Television in the Czech Republic and the Swiss Confederation: Comparative Analysis

Abstract:

Práce porovnává společnosti provozující televizi veřejné služby ve Švýcarské konfederaci a v České republice. V úvodu práce je srovnávána zákonná definice veřejné služby v obou zemích, a poté její konkrétní promítnutí do podoby organizační struktury a způsobu financování švýcarské společnosti SRG SSR idée suisse a České televize. Dále byla provedena komparace programové skladby plnoformátových programů České televize a Schweizer Fernsehen, která provozuje televizní programy veřejné služby pro německy mluvící část Švýcarska. Srovnávány byly především vysílané žánry a původ vysílaných pořadů na základě kvantitativní obsahové analýzy. Práce je uzavřena analýzou hlavní zpravodajské relace srovnávaných televizí, Událostí na České televizi a Tagesschau ve Schweizer Fernsehen. Jako nejvhodnější metoda pro ověření zvolené hypotézy, že zpravodajství Schweizer Fernsehen bude vykazovat prvky infotainmentu ve větší míře než zpravodajství České televize, byla zvolena kvantitativní obsahová analýza doplněná o kvalitativní analýzu obsahových a formálních prvků obou relací. Na základě provedeného výzkumu byla tato hypotéza zamítnuta.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis compares the companies providing public service television broadcasting in the Swiss Confederation and the Czech Republic. In the first part of the thesis there is the definition of public service compared, as it is stated by law in both countries. Then there is tested the projection to the organisational form of both the Czech Television and the SRG SSR idée suisse company as well as their financing opportunities. Further, the programming structure of the two main channels of the Czech Television (Česká televize) and the Swiss Television (Schweizer Fernsehen – which provides TV channels for the german speaking part of the country) is compared. Genres categories and origin of the programmes broadcasted are observed and the method of quantitative content analysis is used. In the last part of this thesis evening newscasts of both TV companies are compared (Události on the Czech Television and Tagesschau on the Swiss Television). The hypothesis was constructed that the newscast of the Swiss Television will contain more attributes of infotainment than the Czech Television and for the purpose of testing, a quantitative content analysis and a qualitative analysis of the contentual and formal characteristics were used. This hypothesis was refused on the basis of the research outcome.
