Devices Evoking an Artistic Illusion

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Prostředky navození umělecké iluze“ je založena na formální analýze dvou tragických situací, jež se vyskytují v dílech Svět podle Garpa od Johna Irvinga a Ulehni v temnotách od Williama Styrona. Oba romány jsou obsahově a z hlediska navozených emocí srovnatelné. Rozdíl mezi nimi tkví ve způsobu utváření tragična a s ním spojených pocitů. Literární dílo lze rozdělit na dvě složky: obsah a formu. Analýza a následné porovnání tragických situací se zaměřuje na formální stránku. Práce by měla poskytnout několik konkrétních formálních kategorií pro popis jakéhokoliv literárního díla, a obzvláště pro popis tragické události v románu. Formální uspořádání je tvořeno „stylem“ (jazykovou výstavbou) a kompozicí. Jazyková výstavba byla včleněna do synopse. Kompozice je dále zkoumána použitím různých lingvistických kategoríí, z nichž je například způsob vyprávění důležitým prvkem utváření významu a jeho interpretace čtenářem.

Abstract:

Bachelor’s Thesis „Devices Evoking an Artistic Illusion“ is based on formal interpretation of two tragical events in different narrative texts: The World According to Garp written by John Irving and Lie Down in Darkness written by William Styron. Both novels are comparable in light of content as well as in evoking emotions. The main difference between the fictional situations is in modality, which forms human feelings while reading a text. Narrative text can be divided in two main parts: matter and form. Analysing and comparing the way tragical emotions are created in a certain narrative situation is focused on the form. It should give some particular categories for describing the formal structure of any text, especially for tragedy as a part of a novel. Formal construction contains “style” (which means usage of concrete words and structures) and „composition“. Style is reflected in synopsis. Composition is interpreted through several linguistic categories. For example, in the way the story is told it is important how the tenor is constructed by the author and understood by the reader.
