Theatre performance live: live streaming as a hybrid medium

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce jsou přímé přenosy divadelních představení v době nových médií. Konkrétněji přímé přenosy oper promítané do kin po celém světě (například představení z Metropolitní Opery v New Yorku a dalších významných evropských operních institucí). Ve své práci předpokládám, že v současné době „instantního času“ nových médií se mění naše chápání kategorií živé vs. zprostředkované, bezprostřední/autentické vs. mediované. Cílem práce je popsat aktuální fenomén přímých přenosů z několika úhlů pohledu. Živé přenosy divadelních představení budu zkoumat zaprvé z hlediska vývoje tohoto fenoménu (1. přímý přenos a postupné šíření této praxe). Zadruhé se zaměřím na popis samotného způsobu, jak dochází k mediaci (jak technicky ovlivňuje přímý přenos představení v divadle a jeho mediálně zprostředkovanou produkci). Zatřetí budu na přímé přenosy nahlížet z hlediska jejich místa ve struktuře marketingových strategií kin (případně divadel). Celkový obraz daného fenoménu doplním strukturovanými rozhovory s návštěvníky a lidmi, kteří se na fungování těchto představení podílejí. Celý tento fenomén ukotvím teoreticky v práci Philipa Auslandera (Liveness, 1999), který poukazuje na to, jak se naše chápání „živosti“ mění v době nových médií. K popisu vývoje přímých přenosů divadelních představení použiji dostupné webové stránky, převážně web Metropolitní opery a také články na tematických blozích týkajících se opery. Tyto články problematiku vývoje přehledně shrnují. Pro část práce popisující technický vliv na produkci představení vyjdu z teorie remediace Boltera a Grusina (2000). Zde využiji jeho rozlišení pojmů hypermediace a imediace a zjistím, který z těchto modů se zde uplatňuje. Marketingové záměry přímých přenosů pomůže nastínit oficiální web Metropolitní opery a také souhrnná bakalářská práce Kamily Dohnalové, týkající se marketingu kulturních institucí, která mimo jiné přehledně shrnuje výsledek marketingové strategie Metropolitní Opery. Další doplňující informace budu čerpat z tematických webů, blogů a magazínů.

Abstract:

The topic of the current diploma thesis is live streaming of theatre performances in the new media era. Particularly it deals with live streaming of operas from Metropolitan Opera in New York to cinemas and theatres all over the world. The prerequisite of the thesis is that in today’s “instant time” period of new media the understanding of categories live vs. mediated, immediate/authentic vs. mediated has changed. The aim of the thesis is to describe the current phenomenon of live streaming from several points of view. Live streaming of theatre performances is viewed from the perspective of the development of this phenomenon (1st live streaming and gradual proliferation of this practice). The thesis further focuses on a description of the actual method of mediation (how it technically influences the live streaming of performance in theatre and its mediated production). Thirdly, the streamings are viewed from the perspective of their location in the structure of cinema (or theatre) marketing strategies. The overall picture of the phenomenon is completed with structured interviews with visitors and people who are involved in functioning of these performances.This whole phenomenon is theoretically anchored in the work of Philip Auslander who points out that our understanding of “liveness” is changing in the era of new media. For the description of the development of live streaming of theatre performances there are used the available web pages, mostly the web of Metropolitan Opera and also articles from themed blogs dealing with opera. These articles summarize clearly the issue of the development. In the part describing the technical impact on the production of performances I draw on the theory of remediation by Bolter and Grusin. There is used his distinction of notions of hypermediacy and immediacy to identify which of these modes is applied in this case. The marketing objectives of live streaming are foreshadowed by the official web of Metropolitan Opera and also the comprehensive bachelor thesis by Kamila Dohnalová which deals with marketing of cultural institutions which also clearly summarizes the result of the marketing strategy of the Metropolitan Opera. For further additional information I draw from the themed webs, blogs and magazines.
