Burnout syndrome in the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na syndrom vyhoření (burnout syndrom) jako konečnou fázi procesu GAS-General Adaptation Syndrom. GAS představuje souhrn symptomů, které vznikají při vyrovnávání se se zátěží a stresem, a předcházejí syndromu vyhoření, který je již zařazen Světovou zdravotnickou organizaci na seznam nemocí. V teoretické části je zdůrazněna role pracovní zátěže a chronického stresu při etiologii syndromu vyhoření. Jsou zde popsány samotné projevy na psychické, somatické a sociální úrovni i z pohledu pandemie COVID-19. U prevence jsou vysvětleny mechanismy, které lidem dříve pomáhaly od stresu a úzkosti, ale v době pandemie kvůli omezením nefungují. Cílem praktické části je zjistit pomoci dotazníkového šetření zdroje pracovního stresu, míru odolnosti a četnost výskytu syndromu vyhoření, a to v závislosti na profesi a věku respondentů dané organizace v době pandemie COVID-19. Na základě vyhodnocení kvantitativního šetření a ve spojitosti s teoretickými poznatky odvodit doporučení pro prevenci syndromu vyhoření.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on burnout syndrome as a final phase of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) process. GAS represents a set of symptoms which arise while dealing with pressure and stress and precede the burnout syndrome which is now listed as a disease by World Health Organisation. The emphasis of the theoretical part is on the role of workload and chronic stress in etiology of burnout syndrome. There is a description of psychological, somatic and social responses in general as well as during the COVID-19 pandemic. There is also an explanation of mechanisms which people used in the past to overcome stress and anxiety but which were not effective due to pandemic restrictions. The objective of the practical part is, by use of a questionnaire, to determine the sources of work stress, the level of resilience and the frequency of burnout syndrome in relation to profession and age of the respondents in the given organisation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The recommendations for preventing burnout syndrome are based on the outcomes of quantitative research in conjunction with the theoretical findings.
