The aim of this thesis is to describe the development of the office of the First Lady of the United States. To illustrate how this office has evolved since its establishment in the 18th century, five first ladies representing different periods of American history are discussed. Cílem této práce je popsat vývoj úřadu první dámy Spojených států amerických. Vývoj této funkce od jejího vzniku v 18. století je ukázán na příkladu pěti prvních dam, z nichž každá zastupuje jiné období amerických dějin.
