The role of religion in values and value orientations: A comparative study of Czech, Polish and Dutch populations.

Abstract:

This Thesis is focused on the role of religion in value formations and orientations. It is a comparative study of the Czech Republic, Poland and the Netherlands. In the theoretical part the historical roots of religion in these three countries are explained in brief, the role of religiosity in value formation and differentiation is emphasized as well as the changing significance of religiosity from a generational perspective. Furthermore this part is focused on the very structure of fundamental values defined by the eminent researcher in value area Shalom H. Schwartz. The main objective is to identify and explain differences in values and value orientations in the three countries. Another goal is to find out the change in the role of religiosity over the course of time and the last is how inclination to religion influences the level of fundamental values in life such as amorality or cheating state. To verify the hypotheses the data from the European Values Study Survey 2008 will be utilized.
