Monte Carlo experiments as a tool for the analysis of estimation techniques

Abstract:

Monte Carlo simulace byla navržena jako experimentální pravděpodobnostní metoda k řešení obtížných deterministických problémů tak, aby počítače mohly snadno simulovat velké množství experimentálních pokusů s náhodnými výsledky. Tato práce tuto metodu představuje a seznamuje se základy a prováděním takových simulací se zaměřením se na kontrolu jejich přesnosti, nalezení jejich omezení, zvyšování jejich účinností, prezentování a interpretaci výsledků, zejména pokud je simulační studie použita k hodnocení vlastností jednotlivých inferencí. V práci jsou popsány použití Monte Carlo simulací k odhadům rozdělení funkcí náhodných veličin, momentů a pravděpodobností, analýzy kvality testů a je upozorněno na problémy s nimi spojené. Dále je také ukázáno použití Monte Carlo metody v AR(1) a ARX(1) modelech, v testu RESET v klasickém lineárním regresním modelu a odhadu spotřební funkce pomocí MNČ a M2NČ. Součástí práce jsou aplikované příklady těchto simulací, zpracované v prostředí MATLAB.

Abstract:

Monte Carlo Simulation was designed as an experimental probabilistic method to solving difficult deterministic problems so that computers can easily simulate a large number of experimental trials with random results. This thesis introduces this method and demonstrates the basics and performing such simulations with focus on control of their accuracy, finding their limitations, increasing their efficiency, presentation and interpretation of results, especially when a simulation study is used to assess the characteristics of each inference. Here are described the use of Monte Carlo Simulations to estimate the distribution of functions of random variables, moments and probability, analysis quality of tests and are pointed out problems associated with them. It is also shown using Monte Carlo methods in AR(1) and ARX(1) models, the RESET test in classical linear regression model and estimation of the consumption function using OLS and TSLS. Included are applied examples of these simulations, processed in MATLAB.
