Contextual cartographic visualization and its utilization in crisis management

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřena na kontextovou kartografickou vizualizaci. Obsahuje jak popis teoretických aspektů dané problematiky, tak i ukázku jejich aplikace na praktickém příkladu. V úvodní části jsou vymezeny cíle a metody práce. Samostatná kapitola je věnována zhodnocení dosud publikovaných prací souvisejících s kontextovou kartografickou vizualizací a příbuznými oblastmi vědeckého výzkumu. Výchozím bodem teoretické části je analýza kartografické komunikace. Následně je zkoumán proces užívání map prostřednictvím pohledu z oblasti kognitivní psychologie. Získané poznatky jsou poté využity pro zhodnocení kartografických vyjadřovacích prostředků. Dále je vymezen termín kontext a je popsána jeho kategorizace. Pozornost je věnována také přehledu a popisu metod adaptace, které lze v rámci kontextové kartografické vizualizace využít. Následující část práce je věnována aplikaci kontextové kartografické vizualizace v oblasti krizového managementu. Na praktické ukázce je popsán proces vytváření sady kontextových map. Podkladem pro vymezení účelu těchto map je analýza rozhodovacích procesů v krizovém managementu a role map v těchto procesech. Dále je popsán výběr jednotlivých parametrů kontextu, stanovení jejich hodnot a vymezení kontextů, výběr zdrojových dat a vhodných prostředků kartografické vizualizace a také proces konfigurace kontextové mapové služby, jejímž prostřednictvím jsou kontextové mapy zobrazovány. Výsledkem je sada kontextových map určených pro operátory Krajských operačních a informačních středisek HZS ČR. V závěrečné části práce jsou některé z charakteristik vytvořených mapových výstupů zhodnoceny metodou měření výkonů pokusných osob při práci s mapou. Výsledky testování ukazují, že využitím kontextové kartografické vizualizace lze dosáhnout zlepšení v kvalitě rozhodovacích procesů v krizovém managementu. Výsledky popisované v předkládané disertační práci jsou součástí řešení výzkumného záměru „Dynamická geovizualizace v krizovém managementu“ (MSM0021622418).

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis deals with contextual cartographic visualization. It covers both theoretical aspects of the topic and a practical demonstration of its application. The introductory part describes aims and methods of work. An individual chapter is devoted to evaluation of publications dealing with contextual cartographic visualization and related fields of scientific research. The theoretical part starts with an analysis of cartographic communication. Then the process of map use is examined from the point of view of cognitive psychology. The results are used for an evaluation of cartographic means of expression. In the next chapter, the term context is defined and categorized. Adaptation methods that can be used in contextual cartographic visualization are also described. The following part of the thesis is focused on application of contextual cartographic visualization in crisis management. The process of creating a set of contextual maps is demonstrated in an example. Purpose of the maps is defined on basis of an analysis of decision-making processes in crisis management and the role of maps in these processes. Attention is also paid to selection of individual context parameters, delimitation of their values and definition of contexts, selection of source data and suitable visualization methods and also to configuration of contextual map service used for visualization of the maps. The above-described steps result into creation of a set of contextual maps designed for operators of Regional Operation and Information Centers of the Fire Rescue Service of the Czech Republic. In the final part of the thesis, several characteristics of the created maps are evaluated by the method of measuring performance of subjects during experimental use of the maps. Results of this testing show that use of contextual cartographic visualization can improve the quality of decision-making processes in crisis management. The presented dissertation thesis is a part of solving the research plan „Dynamic Geovisualization in Crisis Management“ (MSM0021622418).
