Social networking websites - public sphere of 21st century?

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá komunitními servery a jejich potenciálem utvářet novou veřejnou sféru, kde by se mohla rozvíjet relevantní občansky uvědomělá diskuze vedoucí k utváření silné občanské společnosti. Problematika je nejprve zpracována teoreticky: Od vymezení pojmů veřejnost, veřejná sféra a občanská společnost přes popis jejich vzniku a postupného formování, text dále navazuje aplikací těchto pojmů na prostředí internetu. Po shrnutí kladů i záporů vlivu tohoto média na formování veřejné sféry se dále autorka podrobněji zabývá komunitními servery – službami, které v posledních několika letech nabývají stále větší popularity napříč širokou veřejností internetových uživatelů. Jejich potenciál posilovat aktivní zájem občanů o věci veřejné je v rámci textu konkretizován na příkladě globálně nejpopulárnějšího komunitního serveru Facebook. Teoretickými východisky celé práce jsou model veřejné sféry německého filosofa a sociologa Jürgena Habermase a koncept „demokratického potenciálu internetu“, jehož autorkou je italská teoretička nových médií Sara Bentivegna. Druhá část textu je poté tvořena popisem doprovodného projektu ILEGO, který autorka zrealizovala s cílem ověřit získané teoretické závěry v praxi.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on social networking websites and their potential to create public sphere, where class-conscious discussions can develop and thus build strong civic society. The topic is studied from the theoretical point of view at first: from defining terms such as public, public sphere and civic society to description of their gradual shaping, the thesis continually progresses to applying these terms in the internet network environment. After summarizing the assets and the weak points of the internet’s influence on shaping of the public sphere, the author then focuses on the social networking websites – services which have been gaining popularity across the whole society of internet users in the past few years. Their potential to support people’s active approach to public problems is showcased on the example of the most popular community server Facebook. Theoretical cornerstones of this thesis are the model of public sphere created by German philosopher and sociologist Jürgen Habermas and the concept of „democratic potential of the Internet” from Italian new media theorist Sara Bentivegna. The second part of the thesis then focuses on the description of the ILEGO project, which was put together by the author herself with the intention to prove the acquired theoretical conclusions.
