Economic consequences of low fertility in Europe

Abstract:

V současnosti velmi vysoký poměr ekonomicky aktivních generuje klesající porodnost, která je spolu s imigrací pod hranicí udržitelnosti. Cílem bakalářské práce je zjistit, zda je nízká porodnost probíhající v Evropě překážkou v hospodářském růstu či nikoliv. V krátkém období pokles porodnosti bude snižovat index ekonomické závislosti mladých lidí a zvyšovat počet ekonomicky aktivních, díky čemuž roste příjem na hlavu. Menší množství dětí umožní každé rodině investovat více do vzdělání a zdraví svých dětí, čímž roste hodnota jejich lidského kapitálu. V dlouhém období ale převyšuje index závislosti starých lidí nad indexem závislosti mladých lidí a pokračující nízká porodnost povede v případě chybějící imigrace k úbytku pracovních sil. V případě vhodně provedených penzijních reforem a umožnění volného pohybu pracovních sil, mohou být dlouhodobé důsledky pozitivní díky rostoucí hodnotě lidského kapitálu.

Abstract:

It is shown that the currently very high working-age shares generated by the recent declines in fertility rate and migration inflows are not sustainable. The main objective of this bachelor thesis is to find out if the low fertility rate in Europe is an obstacle for the economic growth or not. In the short run, a fall in the fertility rate will lower the youth dependency ratio and increase the working-age share, thus raising income per capita. Having fewer children allows each family to invest more money in education and health of their children, thereby increasing the value of their human capital. In the long run, however, the old age dependency ratio surpasses the youth dependency ratio and the continuing low fertility rate leads to small working-age shares in the absence of large migration inflows. In the case of properly implemented pension reforms and no barriers to in-migration of labor forces, there might be positive consequences in the long run mainly because of increasing value of human capital.
