Analysis of stylistic elements in Yorgos Lanthimos's film "Poor Things"

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská je zaměřena na zkoumání specifických aspektů tvorby tohoto významného režiséra. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. První část má teoretický charakter. V této části jsem využila internetové zdroje k analýze stylu a tematických prvků, které se objevují v předchozích filmech Yorgose Lanthimose. Dále jsou zde vysvětleny klíčové pojmy a koncepty potřebné pro pochopení metodologie použité v druhé části práce. Druhá část je věnována neoformalistické analýze filmu „Chudáčci“, kterou jsem provedla na základě metody definované Kristin Thompson. Tato část zahrnuje analýzu narativní formy a stylistických prvků, jako jsou mizanscéna, kamera, zvuk a střih. Jedním z hlavních cílů této analýzy bylo identifikovat dominantu filmu, což je klíčový koncept neoformalistické analýzy. Na základě výsledků této analýzy jsem poté zařadila film „Chudáčci“ do širšího kontextu Lanthimosovy kariéry. Tímto způsobem jsem poukázala na vývoj jeho režijního stylu a na to, jak tento film přispívá k jeho celkové filmografii. Práce přináší nový pohled na tvorbu Yorgose Lanthimose a jeho přístup k narativní struktuře a stylistickým prostředkům, čímž přispívá k hlubšímu pochopení jeho díla a k diskusi o současné kinematografii.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis, titled Analysis of Stylistic Elements in Yorgos Lanthimos' Film "Poor Things", focuses on the exploration of stylistic and narrative aspects of this unique cinematic work. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first, theoretical part utilizes online sources to examine the style and thematic features of Yorgos Lanthimos’ previous films. This section also explains essential terms necessary for understanding the second part, which is dedicated to a neoformalist analysis of the film based on the method defined by Kristin Thompson. The second part is practical and involves a detailed analysis of the film’s narrative structure and stylistic elements, such as mise-en-scène, cinematography, sound, and editing. Through this analysis, the dominant feature of the film was identified—a primary goal of neoformalist analysis. Subsequently, this dominant aspect was used to place Poor Things within the broader context of Lanthimos’ career, showcasing how his style has evolved over time. The thesis aims to provide a deeper understanding of the creative approaches and artistic strategies employed by Yorgos Lanthimos, contributing to the study of contemporary cinema and its stylistic innovations.
