Translating children's literature: Analysis of Joseph Jacobs's fairy tales

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá překladem dětské literatury, především překladem pohádek. Pohádky jsou rozebrány z hlediska jejich charakteristiky, pohádkových postav, ale i z hlediska jejich významu v sociálním a psychologickém kontextu. Předmětem překladové analýzy jsou Keltské pohádky od Josepha Jacobse a jejich dva české překlady. Tyto pohádky jsou analyzovány nejen z hlediska jevů typicky se vyskytujících v pohádkách (např. jména pohádkových postav a jejich popis) a jejich překladu, ale také z hlediska jazykových a syntaktických prvků vyskytujících se v obou českých překladech (např. se zkoumá užití uvozovacích sloves, zdrobnělin, archaismů). Jednotlivá překladová řešení obou českých překladů jsou základem k charakterizaci jejich překladového stylu. Rovněž je zmíněn styl Jacobsových pohádek, jakož i pohádek obecně. Doplňková analýza se také zabývá tendencí ke zjednodušování (simplifikaci) syntaxu i slovní zásoby v dětské literatuře s ohledem na čtenáře, a to v původním anglickém znění v porovnání s ukázkou literatury určené pro dospělé čtenáře. Simplifikace je také zkoumána v rámci překladů Jacobsových pohádek.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with translation of children`s literature, mainly with translation of fairy tales. Fairy tales are examined with reference to their characteristic features, fairy-tale characters but also with reference to their role in social and psychological context. The translation analysis is concerned with Celtic Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs and their two translations to Czech. Within these fairy tales, features typical of the genre (e.g. fairy-tale characters` names and their descriptions) and their translation are analysed as well as linguistic and syntactic features appearing in the Czech translations (e.g. the use of reporting verbs, diminutives, archaisms). Individual translators` styles are described in accordance with their translational solutions. Also Jacobs`s style and the style of fairy tales are mentioned. The supplementary analysis focuses on tendencies towards simplifying vocabulary and syntax within children`s literature with reference to child readership. A sample of fairy tales by Jacobs is therefore compared with a sample of adult fiction. Simplification is also examined within the Czech translations of Jacobs.
