The Evolution and Perspectives of NATO Missile Defence

Abstract:

Cílem předkládané práce je představit vývoj a perspektivy protiraketové obrany NATO a analyzovat je v kontextu adaptace Aliance na nové bezpečnostní prostředí, jež po studené válce zahrnuje odlišné hrozby a výzvy členským státům Aliance, jejich teritoriu i populaci nebo společným vojskům dislokovaným mimo území Aliance. Protiraketová obrana NATO úzce souvisí s debatami i rozmisťováním rudimentárního systému protiraketové obrany USA a z toho plynou aliančním projektům hybatelé i limity. Využity a dále rozvinuty budou především poznatky institucionalismu, z nichž vychází hlavní argument práce – představa adaptace jako procesu budování nových aktiv zaměřených specificky na hrozby nového bezpečnostního prostředí; a snahy zařadit protiraketovou obranu do strategie NATO jako součást tohoto procesu.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to introduce the evolution and perspectives of NATO missile defence and to analyze them in the context of NATO adaptation to the new security environment. After the cold war it includes different threats and challenges to the NATO member states, their territory and population and joint forces dislocated out of Alliance area. The NATO missile defence is closely related to the debates and dislocation of rudimentary system od the US missile defence and this relationship implies impetus as well as limits to the Alliance projects. Findings of the institutional theory are used and expanded foremost. From institutionalism results the main argument of this thesis – the image of the adaptation as a process of building new assets specialized to deal with threats of the new security environment. The effort to include the missile defence to the NATO strategy is part of this process.
