Reception of Julius Zeyer's dramatic works from view of dramatic criticism in second half of 19th century

Abstract:

Tato práce si klade za cíl analýzu a interpretaci recepce dramatického díla Julia Zeyera – význačného autora 2. poloviny 19. století, představitele tzv. lumírovské generace, jehož tvorba se v době jeho života setkávala s různorodými reakcemi z řad kritiky i neodborné veřejnosti od negativních ohlasů až po nadšené přijetí. Pozornost je směřovaná k Zeyerovým pracím, kterým se dostalo jevištního zpracování. Zaměřujeme se na dílo inscenované za autorova života, přičemž zvláštní pozornost je věnována premiérám na scéně Národního divadla. Hraničními body tohoto horizontu jsou data autorova divadelního debutu na scéně Prozatímního divadla (1882) a rok jeho úmrtí (1901). Programově se tedy nezabýváme „dalším životem“ díla, proměnami, ke kterým v jeho přijímání dochází po autorově smrti. Těžištěm práce je tedy nástin vývoje reflexe Zeyerových her inscenovaných za jeho života na jevišti Národního divadla. K této rekonstrukci dobového kontextu docházíme prostřednictvím dostupných dobových ohlasů, novinových článků, kritických postřehů, korespondence a monografií. Tomuto základnímu cíli je podřízena i struktura celé práce. Recepce dramatického díla Julia Zeyera je od počátku provázena nejednotou a mnohdy i radikálně protichůdnými postoji. Ani v době autorova největšího souznění s kritickou veřejností není jeho přijímání absolutní a všeobecné. Práce v tomto smyslu poukazuje na některé z faktorů, které se na konstruování oné ambivalence podílejí. Hledání svého místa v české divadelní kultuře 19. století bylo pro Zeyera značně náročné a mnohdy neradostné. Přesto však v této činnosti přes jisté peripetie vytrval, aby se mu v poslední fázi života dostalo alespoň částečného zadostiučinění, po kterém dlouhá léta bytostně toužil.

Abstract:

This work is an interpretation of dramatic production of Julius Zeyer, who was an impersonator of Lumir generation and notable author in the second half of the 19th century. His writings were inconsistent at the time because many people as literary critics and part of the public accepted his works negatively but other part of the public and critics were enthusiastic about his writings. Attention is aim at Zeyer’s works which were worked into a scenic form. We are focusing on a work which was staged during his life especially on the first appearances on the stage of the National Theater. Limiting points of this horizon are dates of author’s theater debut on the stage of Prozatimni Theater (1882) and the date of his death (1901). We are not concerned with “other life” of the work which changed after author’s death. Emphasis of this work is summary of progress Zeyer’s dramas staged in the National Theater during his life. To this reconstruction on contemporary connection we go through available information of public acceptance, newspaper’s articles, critic’s observations, correspondence and monographs. To this prime goal is subordinated a structure of whole thesis. The reception of Julius Zeyer’s dramatic work is guided by disunity and radical contradictorily position. Even in author’s biggest consonance with critic public he was not admitted absolutely. The work in this sense point out that some factors share construction of the ambivalence. However was for Zeyer very hard and stressful to find “his place” in the Czech drama culture of the 19th century, he persisted and in the final phase of his life he got at least a partial satisfaction that he always longed to.
