The Context of Band Aid, USA for Africa and Live Aid in the evolution of modern popular music and absence of perception of this context in Czechoslovakian environment

Abstract:

Bob Geldof v polovině 80. let inicioval a organizoval projekty, které mají v historii a vývoji moderní populární hudby jazzového okruhu podobně zásadní význam jako americký festival Woodstock 1969. Charitativní nahrávání Band Aid 1984, USA for Africa 1985 a charitativní dvojkoncert Live Aid 1985. Tyto kulturní události měly významný přesah do sfér sociologie, politiky, komunikačních technologií a vývoje charitativní sféry. Měly celospolečenský vliv a formovaly historii konce dvacátého století. Důsledkem cenzury kultury, která panovala v Československu 80. let, nebyl celostátní televizí vysílán živý přenos koncertu Live Aid. Tento fakt ovlivňuje vnímání kontextu, který projekty okruhu Live Aid mají v oblasti populární hudby a taktéž v oblasti kultury. Československé prostředí absentuje vlastní literaturu, která by projekty mapovala. V oblasti neziskového sektoru zde není dostatečně vžitá forma benefičního koncertu, jako součásti fundraisingu. Tento text přináší faktografický souhrn, který projekty Band Aid, USA for Africa a Live Aid systematicky zpracovává.

Abstract:

Bob Gedolf initiated and organized some of the projects in the mid-80s that are as important for the history and development on modern jazz-based pop music as is the well-known American festival Woodstock 1969. The recording of Band Aid 1984 for charity, and its sequel of similar character, USA for Africa 1985 and charity double-concert Live Aid 1985. All these events had an overlap to the fields of Sociology, Politics, Communication Technologies and the development of Charity itself. These concerts had a society-wide impact and formed the history of the late 20th century. As a result of cultural censorship in Czechoslovakia in the 80s, the national TV had not broadcasted the live feed of Live Aid concert. This fact has a direct impact on the perception of the context of Live Aid projects in the area of pop music and also in culture as such. The Czechoslovak environment lacks and kind of literature reflecting these projects. Also in the field of non-profit sector concerts for charity are not considered an enough deep-seated form of fundraising. This thesis brings a factual summary that concludes Band Aid, USA for Africa and Live Aid projects.
