Afro-American Culture: Living in a Ghetto

Abstract:

The author of this paper decided to deal with the problems of ghetto living. At the beginning of this paper, these problems are foreshadowed and data that are engaged in these problems are used. These data cover mainly the first half of the 20th century. The main part of this paper encompasses stories from three books {--} Black Boy, Notes of a Native Son, and Sonny{\crq}s Blues and other stories; and one film {--} Do The Right Thing. This part includes storylines; reflections of the ghetto problems, which were mentioned in these pieces of works; and approaches of the authors of these works to the topic of the ghetto. The primary emphasis is put on the reflections of the ghetto problems. Further data that cover the ghetto problems mentioned in the books and in the film are used to manifest the historical facts that deal with these problems. The books describe the period of the first half of the 20th century or the 1950s, and the film takes place in 1980s. The conclusion addresses the main ghetto problems that were depicted in the books and in the film, and differences and common themes are compared. The main topics of the ghetto reflections in the books are {--} poverty, segregation, ``bitterness{\crqq} of blacks, housing and employment discrimination, and white policemen. The main topic of the film is racism. The problems of the ghetto dwellers are changing in the reflections depending on - the period, place, and the facts that the author intents to highlight. The main intent of this paper lies in depiction of the ghetto problems. The present writer endeavours to demonstrate by these exemplifications that the lives of African-Americans were throughout the majority of the 20th century separate and unequal.

Autor této práce se zabývá problémy, jež jsou spojeny s životem v ghettu. Na začátku této práce jsou tyto problémy nastíněny a jsou zde použita historická data, která se týkají těchto problémů. Tato data se týkají především první poloviny 20. století. Hlavní část této práce reflektuje problematiku života v ghettu ve třech knihách {--} Black Boy, Notes of a Native Sony, a Sonny´s Blues and other stories; a ve filmu {--} Do The Right Thing. Mimo jiné tato část obsahuje děje těchto knih a filmu, a také přístupy autorů k tématu ghetta. Hlavní důraz je kladen na reflexi problémů ghetta. U této reflexe knih a filmů jsou použita další data, která korespondují s daným problémem v ghettu. Knihy popisují období od počátku 20. století do padesátých let tohoto století a děj filmu se odehrává v 80. letech 20. století. Závěry, kterých bylo dosaženo, především reflektují problémy, které byly zmíněny v těchto dílech. Porovnávány jsou rozdíly a také stejná témata. Hlavními motivy těchto reflexí týkajících se knih jsou {--} chudoba, segregace, {\clqq}zloba`` Afroameričanů, diskriminace týkající se bydlení a zaměstnání, a také jakási všudypřítomnost bílých policistů. Hlavním tématem filmu je rasismus. Problémy obyvatel ghetta se mění v závislosti na {--} období; místě; a na faktech, jež se autor snažil zviditelnit. Hlavní účel této práce spočívá v zobrazení problémů které jsou spojeny s životem v ghettu. Autor této práce se těmito příklady snaží demonstrovat, že životy Afroameričanů byly skoro v celém 20. století izolované a nerovné ve srovnání s životy bílých Američanů.
