Evil as an Aesthetic Defect?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Zlo jako estetický defekt?“ se zabývá tématem etické kritiky umění, její oprávněnosti a významu pro obecné otázky definice estetiky a relevance estetických hodnot. V první části předkládá výklad některých souvisejících pojmů, jako například estetická hodnota, narativní umění, pojem zla, etiky, morálky a morálního defektu. Druhá část se zabývá pěti základními přístupy k otázce etické kritiky umění. Nejprve definuje nejextrémnější pozice – radikální moralismus a radikální autonomismus, hodnotí jejich možný přínos a jejich kritiku. Stejným způsobem pak přibližuje i další přístupy – umírněný autonomismus v pojetí Jamese Andersona a Jeffreyho Deana, umírněný moralismus obhajovaný Noelem Carrollem a nakonec eticismus Beryse Gauta. Upozorňuje na jistou výlučnost Gautova eticismu, která souvisí s jeho odlišným výkladem pojmů estetika a estetická hodnota. Závěrečná část práce se zabývá analýzou dvou konkrétních uměleckých děl na pozadí sporu o etickou kritiku umění. Jde o film Triumf vůle, brilantně rozebraný Mary Devereauxovou. Druhým filmem je Král Šumavy, který je vlastním pokusem autora o etickou kritiku díla právě s využitím práce Devereauxové a na základě závěrů plynoucích ze srovnání rozebíraných pěti obecných přístupů k etické kritice. Z předložené argumentace vyplývá, že nejvhodnější řešení problému oprávněnosti etické kritiky umění poskytuje umírněný moralismus Noela Carrolla.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis „Evil as an Aesthetic defect?“ deals with the issue of ethical criticism of art, legitimacy of this approach, and its importance for the broader questions of definition of aesthetics and relevance of aesthetic values. In the first part, it presents author’s interpretation of several related concepts, such as aesthetic value, narrative art, concept of evil, ethics and morality, and moral defect. Second part covers five fundamental approaches to ethical criticism of art. Starting with two most extreme positions – radical moralism and radical autonomism, author assesses their potential contributions and weak points. In the same way, other approaches are then presented – moderate autonomism promoted by James Anderson and Jeffrey Dean, moderate moralism advocated by Noel Carroll, and finally Berys Gaut’s ethicism. It also points to certain differences of Gaut’s ethicism in relation to his specific interpretation of concepts of aesthetics and aesthetic value. Final part of the paper analyses two works of art using the theoretical dispute of ethical criticism of art as background. Firstly, it is a film Triumph of will brilliantly analysed by Mary Devereaux. Second film analysed is The King of Šumava, which constitutes author’s original attempt of ethical criticism of work of art, based on Devereaux's work as well as conclusions drawn from the comparison of the five fundamental approaches to ethical criticism. In the conclusion the author argues, that the most suitable solution to the problem of legitimacy of ethical criticism, is Noel Carroll’s concept of moderate moralism.
