Analysis of the Google Art project as a distinctive type of a virtual galery

Abstract:

Práce nahlíží na funkční a významové složky webové platformy Google Art. Prostřednictvím analýzy tohoto projektu zaměřeného na virtuální prezentaci umění, nalézá pozitiva i negativa jeho jednotlivých aspektů, funkcí a obsahu. Platformu zařazuje do kontextu jiných virtuálních galerií a zkoumá ji jako galerii umění, nástroj pro práci i jako virtuální prostor zaměřený na uživatelskou přívětivost. Sleduje též konkrétní případy spolupráce uměleckých institucí s touto platformou a české zastoupení v rámci tohoto projektu. Výsledkem je zmapování praktických přínosů, potenciálu a aktuálního stavu galerie Google Art. Zhodnocení projektu jako platformy pro propagaci a popularizaci umění, zvyšující dostupnost uměleckých děl divákům - v tomto ohledu jako platformy zcela ojedinělé a specifické. Dále jako nástroj pro výuku i studium umění v kontextu podobně zaměřených galerií. Projekt hodnotí rovněž coby rozšíření možností tradičních institucí a nové pole působnosti pro kurátorskou praxi. Nalézá též jeho přínos v oblasti správy uměleckých děl, zejména specifických a v rámci tradičních institucí hůře uchopitelných uměleckých forem. Dotýká se jeho srovnání v rámci jiných virtuálních galerií a přibližuje praktické stránky jeho provozu a rozvoje.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the functional and semantic components of the Google Art web platform. Through an analysis of this project, which is focused on the virtual presentation of art, it discovers the positive and negative sides of its individual aspects, functions and content. It sets the platform in context of other virtual galleries and explores it as a gallery of art, a work tool as well as a virtual space focused on user usability. In addition, it observes specific cases of cooperation between art institutions and this platform and the involvement of the Czech Republic in this project. The result is the mapping of practical contributions, the potential and the current state of the Google Art gallery. The thesis presents the evaluation of the project as a platform for promotion and popularisation of art which increases the accessibility of artwork to viewers. In this regard, Google Art is a completely unique and specific platform. Furthermore, it evaluates the project as a tool for both teaching and studying art in comparison to similarly oriented galleries and also as an expansion of possibilities of traditional institutions and a new scope of activity for curator practice. Moreover, it discovers a contribution of the project in the field of artwork management, regarding particularly specific and – within traditional institutions – less seizable forms of art. It touches upon the comparison of the project with other virtual galleries and describes practical aspects of its operation and development.
