The level of pronunciation in two different age groups of users of English

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce Úroveň výslovnosti u dvou různých věkových skupin uživatelů angličtiny se zabývá výslovností českých uživatelů angličtiny, kteří se učili tento jazyk na začátku 90. let 20. století (věková skupina 40+) a těch, kteří se začali učit tento jazyk po roce 2005 (věková skupina 19-22). Tato práce analyzuje dopad kvality výuky anglického jazyka a množství vystavení tomuto jazyku na úroveň výslovnosti. Je rozdělena na dvě části. Teoretická část představuje způsoby výuky/učení výslovnosti, porovnává podmínky pro učení jazyků během dvou zmiňovaných období a popisuje rozdíly mezi českým a anglickým jazykem. Empirická část popisuje výzkumnou metodu a předkládá nálezy výzkumu, analýzu dotazníků a nahrávek. Výsledky výzkumu nepotvrzují jednoznačné zlepšení podmínek pro výuku/učení výslovnosti ani dosažení vyšší úrovně výslovnosti u věkové skupiny 19-22 let.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis The Level of Pronunciation in Two Different Age Groups of Users of English deals with pronunciation of Czech users of English who learnt the language in the early 1990s (the 40+ age group), and those who started to learn the language after 2005 (the 19-22 age group). This thesis analyses the impact of the quality of English teaching and the quantity of the exposure to the language on the level of pronunciation. It is divided into two parts. The theoretical part introduces ways of teaching/learning pronunciation, compares conditions for language learning during the two periods, and describes differences between the Czech language and the English language. The empirical part describes the research method, presents findings of the research, analyses of recordings and questionnaires. The results of the research do not prove either clear-cut improvements on conditions for teaching/learning pronunciation or a higher level of pronunciation in the 19-22 age group.
