Coping with death of a loved one diagnosed with cancer

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vyrovnáváním se se smrtí blízkého člověka s onkologickým onemocněním před smrtí a po ní. Práce teoreticky vychází z aktuálních výzkumů zabývajících se vyrovnáváním se se smrtí a z tradičních a moderních modelů truchlení. Praktická část této práce se pak kvalitativně věnuje rozhovorům s respondenty, kterým zemřel blízký člověk na rakovinu a zároveň byli obeznámeni s jejich nevyléčitelným onemocněním. V rámci pluralistického přístupu byla ke zpracování dat zvolena interpretativní fenomenologická analýza a narativní analýza. Z interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy vzešlo kromě analýz jednotlivých zkušeností také pět témat: „Orientace na život spíše než na smrt“, „Utrpení jako facilitátor“, „Propojení prožívání“, „Vytěsnění“ a „Vztahování k jiné smrti“. Příběhová linie respondentů měla tendenci klesat po zjištění diagnózy a po smrti růst. V rámci žánrové konfigurace většina respondentů dosáhla úspěchu vlivem individuální kontroly. Diskuze pak ukotvuje výsledky analýz v teorii a věnuje se přínosu a limitům práce.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with coping with death of a loved one diagnosed with cancer before and after their death. The theoretical framework is based on current research that covers coping with death and on traditional and modern models of grief. The research part of this thesis processes interviews with participants whose relative died of cancer and who had been familiar with their incurable illness. Within the pluralistic approach the interpretative phenomenological analysis and narrative analysis were used to process the data. Interpretative phenomenological analysis produced five themes: “Orientation on life rather than death”, “Suffering as a facilitator”, “Connection of experience”, “Avoidance” and “Relating to another death”. The storyline tended to decline after the diagnosis and rise after the death. Most respondents achieved success while being in control as perceived through genre configuration. Then, discussion sets the current analysis results in theory and considers the contribution and limits of the thesis.
