Generational change in attitudes towards veganism and vegetarianism as a potential source of conflict

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je odpovědět na otázku, jakým způsobem se promítají generačně podmíněné postoje k veganství a vegetariánství do modelů mezigeneračního soužití v rámci rodin a do modelů udržování příbuzenských vztahů. Proměňují se kulturní vzorce mezigeneračního rodinného života pod vlivem rostoucí popularity veganství a vegetariánství? Pokud ano, jakým způsobem? Navrhovaná práce by měla mimo jiné odpovědět na otázku, zda veganství vnáší do mezigeneračního soužití v rámci rodin nějaké konflikty, a pokud ano, o jaké typy konfliktů se jedná a jaké strategie jejich řešení, zejména vyjednávání či mediace, se v daných případech uplatňují. Teoretická část práce by měla krátce pojednat o fenoménu studovaných způsobů stravování, vymezit základní pojmy a zasadit veganství a vegetariánství do kontextu ekologické etiky a environmentalistiky. Aby bylo možné studovat dopady stravovacích rozdílů spojených s rostoucí oblibou veganství a vegetariánství na rodinné a obecně společenské vztahy, je taktéž nutné vysvětlit takové pojmy jako kulturní vzorce, nebo životní strategie. Praktický výzkum má umožnit zjistit, zda a jakým způsobem zasahuje veganství/vegetariánství - nejenom jako pouhý způsob stravování, ale také jako systém hodnotový, etický, interpretační, racionalizační a identifikační - do etablovaných modelů rodinného soužití, a to všedního i svátečního (sezónní svátky, jubilea, svatby a jiné přechodové rituály, grilování a ostatní rodinné sešlosti). Odpovědi na nastolené otázky budou získávány v rámci kvalitativního výzkumu, konkrétně prostřednictvím chápajících rozhovorů prováděných s malým počtem studentů veganů a vegetariánů Ostravské univerzity, rozšířených o autobiografická vyprávění.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to answer the following questions: in which way do the generationally conditioned stances towards veganism and vegetarianism display in the models of intergenerational cohabitation in terms of family and in the models of maintaining family relations? Do the cultural patterns of intergenerational family life alter under the influence of the growing popularity of veganism and vegetarianism? If so, in which way? Suggested work should also among other things answer the question of veganism bringing conflicts into intergenerational cohabitation, and if so, what type of conflicts does it concern and what strategies of their solving, especially negotiation or mediation, do in said cases apply. The theoretical part should briefly depict the phenomenon of studied ways of eating, define the basic terms and contextualize veganism and vegetarianism into ecological ethics and environmentalism. To be able to study the impacts of the differences of said diets, which are connected to increasing popularity, on family and social relations in general, it is also crucial to explain terms such as cultural patterns or strategies of living. The practical part should be able to find out, if and in which way does veganism/vegetarianism intervene - not only as a mere dietary regiment, but also as a system of principles, ethics, rationalization, and identification - into the integrated models of family cohabitation, both in daily and festive (seasonal holidays, jubilees, weddings and other transitional rituals, barbecues and other family gatherings). The answers to the preceding questions will be gathered within the scope of the qualitative research, particularly through apprehensive interviews done with a small group of vegan and vegetarian students of the University of Ostrava, extended with autobiographical narratives.
