The relationship between the perceived life satisfaction and happiness in Czech population

Abstract:

Předkládaná studie se zabývá koncepty štěstí a životní spokojenosti a jejich vztahem, a to jak na kvantitativní, tak na kvalitativní úrovni. Úvodní teoretická stať shrnuje výchozí koncepce štěstí a spokojenosti a představuje klíčové současné teorie well-beingu jako zastřešujícího pojmu. Důraz je kladen na dichotomii eudaimonického versus hédonického štěstí. Dále se teoretická část práce věnuje dosud odhaleným prediktorům well-beingu a povaze jejich vztahů k well-beingu. Empirická část diplomové práce zkoumá vnímanou úroveň štěstí a životní spokojenosti u vzorku české populace o vělikosti 246 osob, a to metodami Happiness Measures a Satisfaction with Life Scale. Průměrná úroveň spokojenosti respondentů spadala do pásma spíše spokojený a průměrná úroveň štěstí dosahovala úrovně mírně šťastný. Z obsahové analýzy odpovědí na otevřené otázky ohledně determinant štěstí a spokojenosti vyplynulo, že mezi štěstím a spokojeností nelze definovat zobecnitelný vztah. Češi z našeho vzorku ve svých odpovědích více inklinovali k hédonickým než eudaimonickým prožitkům. Nejvýznamnější subjektivněmi vnímanými determinantami well-beingu se ukázaly být rodina, mezilidské vztahy, klid ve smyslu absence problémů, zdraví a úspěch.

Abstract:

The study deals with the concepts of happiness and life satisfaction and their mutual relationship both at quantitative and qualitative level. The introductory theoretical part summarizes the basic conceptions of happiness and life satisfaction and presents some of the key theories of well-being as a covering construct. The dichotomy of eudaimonic and hedonic happiness is emphasized within the entire work. Further on, the theoretical part studies the currently known predictors of well-being and their relationship towards well-being. The exploratory part of this study examines the perceived level of happiness and life satisfaction in a Czech population sample of 246 persons, using the Happiness Measures and Life Satsifaction Scale methods. The average of life satisfaction in the sample was on the level of rather satisfied and the average happiness score belonged to the level of mildly happy. The content analysis of the respondents' open questions answers on what makes them happy/satisfied, showed that there was no relationship between happiness and life satisfaction that could be generalized. The Czechs tended slightly more to the hedonic than to the eudaimonic elements of happiness in their responses. The most frequent subjectively perceived well-being determinants were proved to be family, social relationships, peace (absence of problems), health and achievement.
