Factors promoting and factors inhibiting help-seeking behaviour in adolescence

Abstract:

Ve své diplomové práci jsem zkoumala faktory, které adolescenta podpoří v tom vyhledat v případě potřeby psychologickou pomoc, a faktory, které tomuto procesu naopak brání. Výzkumný soubor tvořili adolescenti (N=21) ve věku 16–22 let. Data byla sbírána pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, následné okódování přepsaných rozhovorů proběhlo v programu Atlas.ti. Tím jsem získala velké množství faktorů, které adolescenta podpoří, anebo odradí od vyhledání a využití odborné pomoci. Tyto faktory jsem následně sloučila do tří kategorií, které se týkají vlastností jejich nositele: Vlastnosti problému, Vlastnosti adolescenta a Vlastnosti profesionála. Samotný problém se svými vlastnostmi (délka, závažnost, příčina) se stává příčinnou podmínkou potřeby vyhledat pomoc. Jak se adolescent s touto potřebou vypořádá, ovlivňují intervenující proměnné, jimiž jsou jeho vlastní charakteristiky (schopnost identifikovat problém, obvyklé copingové strategie, otevřenost, informovanost, postoj k formální pomoci) a charakteristiky pomáhající služby (dostupnost personální, dostupnost časová, dostupnost finanční, charakteristiky profesionála).

Abstract:

The thesis explores the factors either supporting or inhibiting the decision making process of an adolescent when he or she is in need of obtaining psychological help. The study consisted of adolescents (N = 21) aged 16-22 years. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews. The interviews were consequently encoded using Atlas.ti. By this the thesis identifies a large number of factors that support or discourage adolescents from seeking and using professional help. The thesis merges these factors into three categories in relation to their properties: factors of the problem, factors of the adolescent, and factors of the professional provider. The problem itself with its characteristics (length, severity and cause) becomes a causal condition for the need to seek help. How the adolescent can cope with this need is influenced by the intervening variables that are both his or her own characteristics (ability to identify the problem, common coping strategies, openness, awareness, attitude to formal help) and the characteristics of the assisting service (availability of personnel, time availability, financial availability, the qualities of the professional).
