Neighbour-based intrusion detection in wireless sensor networks

Abstract:

Senzorové uzly nachádzajúce sa v blízkom okolí sa zvyknú prejavovať nápodobne. Detekčná technika označovaná ako <i>neighbour-based</i> je založená na tomto princípe a mala by umožňovať detekciu prienikov založenú na pozorovaní anomálií v bezdrôtových senzorových sietiach bez predchádzajúceho tréningu. V poslednej dobe bola táto technika úspešne aplikovaná na útok pozmenených nameraných hodnôt senzoru.<br/> Táto práca poskytuje popis a symptómy útokov <i>selective forwarding</i>, <i>jamming</i>, <i>hello flood</i>, <i>sinkhole</i>, <i>sybil</i>, pozmenených paketov a pozmenených nameraných hodnôt senzoru. Taktiež, <i>neighbour-based</i> systém pre detekciu prienikov schopný odhaliť <i>selective forwarding</i>, <i>jamming</i> a <i>hello flood</i> útoky bol navrhnutý a implementovaný pre operačný systém TinyOS. Tento systém je možné používať v dvoch modifikáciách – jedna má k dispozícii iba informácie o priamych susedoch systému a druhá, ktorá získava informácie aj od svojich susedov vo vzdialenosti jeden alebo dva. Výsledky simulácií, menovite počet chybne pozitívnych a chybne negatívnych varovaní, sú tiež súčasťou diplomovej práce.

Abstract:

Sensor nodes situated spatially close to each other tend to have similar behaviour. The neighbour-based detection technique is based on this principle and should provide means for anomaly intrusion detection in wireless sensor networks without prior training. Recently, this technique has been successfully applied to detect the fabricated information attack in wireless sensor networks.<br/> This work provides a description of selective forwarding, jamming, hello flood, sinkhole, sybil, packet alteration and fabricated information attacks together with their symptoms. Furthermore, a neighbour-based intrusion detection system capable of revealing selective forwarding, jamming and hello flood attacks is designed and implemented for the operating system TinyOS. The intrusion detection system comes in two modifications – one with local knowledge of immediate neighbours only and one involving information exchanged among one-hop or two-hops neighbours. Results of the simulations, namely the number of false negatives and the number of false positives, are described in the thesis also.
