Jazzfest Brno - History and Changes of the Festival throughout the Years

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá mezinárodním jazzovým festivalem JAZZFESTBRNO. Mapuje jeho historii od raných počátků až po současnost. Vykresluje proměny, které festival za svou dobu trvání prodělal. Jednotlivé kapitoly popisují a hodnotí změny festivalu v rozličných oblastech. Přibližuje, kde a jakým způsobem organizační tým získává peněžní prostředky pro fungování festivalu a jaký je podíl veřejných provozních dotací. Porovnává podíl zahraničních a domácích interpretů v jednotlivých ročnících festivalu a zjišťuje, jaká jsou kritéria pro výběr umělců na festival. Následně práce analyzuje celý proces a veškeré náležitosti, které jsou nezbytné pro to, aby se koncertní večer uskutečnil. Festival si za léta svého působení vydobyl jistou mediální tvář. Charakter mediálního vývoje zkoumá kapitola následující. V neposlední řadě práce ukazuje na proměny publika a to formou kvantitativního výzkumu pomocí dotazníkového zkoumání. Práce je doplněna rozhovory s organizačním týmem festivalu. Klade si za cíl prozkoumat vývoj festivalu a vysledovat případné trendy nebo naopak ukázat čím je JAZZFESTBRNO odlišný od jiných evropských jazzových festivalů.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the international jazz festival JAZZFESTBRNO, mapping its history from early beginnings to the present. It portrays the changes that the festival went through, each chapter describing and evaluating changes of the festival in various areas. It also focuses on the question of festival funding, in particular sources of funding, the way of gaining financial resources or the share of public resources in total budget. The thesis also brings the comparison of share of foreign and Czech musicians in each festival year, focusing on criteria for selection of festival performers as well. Afterwards, the thesis analyses the whole process and all requisites necessary for the festival evening to take place. Throughout the festival years this event gained a specific media image, thus a following chapter focuses on a development of festival presentation in the media. Last but not least, the thesis analyses the transformation of the audience and its preferences through an interview survey. The thesis also contains interviews with the organisational team of the festival and thus supplementing previous chapters. The main aim of the thesis is to present the development of the festival and to trace possible trends or rather show in which aspects JAZZFESTBRNO is unique and different from other European jazz festivals.
