The role of the library from the perspective of secondary school students in the context of their information needs

Abstract:

Téma diplomové práce mapuje roli knihoven 21. století u studentů 1. ročníků střední školy (SŠ) a jejich informační potřeby. Práce vznikla ve spolupráci Masarykovy univerzity a Moravské zemské knihovny (MZK), a je založena na interním projektu MZK. Diskutuje potřebu zvýšit návštěvnost v MZK a ověřit funkci nového nástroje k seznámení studentů SŠ se službami MZK, vedoucí ke zvýšení zájmu o knihovnu. Jedná se o vnikovou hru Pronikni do knihovny. Práce se skládá z teoretické a empirické části. Teoretická část prezentuje obdobné výzkumy a studie uskutečněné v České republice a zahraničí. Dále je představena role knihoven 21. století, instituce MZK a hra Pronikni do knihovny. Praktickou část tvoří tří dílčí výzkumy (kvantitativní a kvalitativní) zkoumající postoje studentů ke knihovnám a jejich představy o službách s využitím prototypu hry Pronikni do knihovny. Závěr shrnuje výstupy z jednotlivých šetření a nastiňuje možnosti dalších výzkumů.

Abstract:

This Diploma thesis introduces the role of libraries in the 21st century from the perspective of first-grade secondary school students and their information needs. The thesis is a collaboration between Masaryk University and the Moravian Library (ML) and is based on an internal project of ML. It discusses the need to increase the number of students visiting ML and to test the function of its new tool for the introduction of the library´s services to secondary school students, leading to an increase in their interest in ML. The tool is based on a breakout game called Enter the Library. The thesis consists of a theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part presents similar research and studies conducted in the Czech Republic and abroad. Next, the roles of libraries in the 21st century, the institution Moravian Library and the game are presented. The empirical part consists of three sub-research (quantitative and qualitative) exploring students´ attitudes towards libraries and their perception of services using the prototype of the game Enter the Library. The conclusion summarises the findings from individual surveys and outlines opportunities for further research.
