Beliefs about the Effectiveness of Just Behaviour as a Result of the Belief in a Just World

Abstract:

The study is based on the Just World Theory formulated by M. J. Lerner, and on its central construct of the belief in a just world (BJW). Lerner identified a tendency in the human individual which to some extent modifies the perception and assessment of social phenomena in terms of justice. The main principle of the theory consists in the idea that a person is motivated to see the world as a fair place where everyone gets what they deserve and everyone deserves what they get. The study explored the link between the intensity of the BJW and acting of the respondents in everyday situations, in the dimensions of justice. The sample consisted of 135 students of two universities in Brno, who completed a questionnaire divided into four sections. These examined the responses of the subjects in model situations, self-statements on their own just and unjust behaviour, personality dimensions of conscientiousness and agreeableness, and finally the BJW levels. The data indicated that there are two factors working within the BJW: the general factor and the reactive factor. The results show that the intensity of the BJW doe not influence the inclination of an individual towards a fair or unfair response to a specific situation. Also, there is no correlation between the intensity of the BJW and the willingness to repeat the same type of action once again. We have found a link between the intensity of the BJW and the respondent’s ability to provide a concrete example of their own just and unjust behaviour. One significant fact seems to be the emergence of a relationship between higher BJW levels and citing impersonal dimensions of the problem in descriptions of situations connected with one’s own fair behaviour. One of the key findings is also the link between the BJW general factor and the personality dimension of agreeableness, which explains some of the factor’s variance. The research results also support previous findings that the BJW is not influenced by gender or the student’s specialization.

Abstract:

Základom predkladanej práce je teória spravodlivého sveta, formulovaná M. J. Lernerom, a z nej vychádzajúci konštrukt presvedčenia o spravodlivom svete (belief in a just world - BJW). Identifikoval tendenciu človeka, ktorá do istej miery modifikuje percepciu a posudzovanie sociálnych javov z hľadiska spravodlivosti. Hlavný princíp teórie spočíva v myšlienke, že subjekt je motivovaný vidieť svet ako spravodlivé miesto, kde každý dostane, čo si zaslúži a zaslúži si, čo dostane. Vo výskume bola zisťovaná súvislosť medzi intenzitou BJW a jednaním respondentov v situáciách každodenného života v dimenziách spravodlivosti. Výskumný súbor tvorilo 135 študentov dvoch brnenských vysokých škôl, ktorým bol predložený dotazník pozostávajúci zo 4 oddielov. Tieto skúmali reakcie respondentov v modelových situáciách, sebavýpovede o vlastnom spravodlivom a nespravodlivom jednaní, osobnostné dimenzie svedomitosti a prívetivosti a nakoniec intenzitu BJW. Dáta nám umožnili identifikovať dva faktory BJW – všeobecný a reaktívny. Z výsledkov vyplýva, že intenzita BJW nie je faktorom, ktorý ovplyvňuje jednanie človeka smerom k spravodlivej alebo nespravodlivej reakcii v konkrétnej situácii. Taktiež neexistuje súvislosť medzi intenzitou BJW a ochotou opakovať už raz uskutočnené jednanie. Zistili sme súvislosť medzi intenzitou BJW a schopnosťou jedinca udať konkrétny príklad vlastného spravodlivého a nespravodlivého jednania. Ako významná sa ukázala súvislosť silnejšieho BJW s udávaním neosobnej dimenzie problému v popise situácie vlastného spravodlivého jednania. Podstatným zistením je súvislosť BJW vo všeobecnom faktore s osobnostnou dimenziou prívetivosti, ktorá vysvetľuje určitú časť jeho rozptylu. Výsledky výskumu taktiež podporujú predchádzajúce zistenia o nezávislosti BJW na pohlaví a taktiež na študijnom zameraní.
