The power of social workers

Abstract:

Moc je neoddělitelnou součástí sociální práce. Ačkoli je všeobecně nahlížena jako negativní a špatná, podle Foucaulta je produktivní a nepostradatelná. Cílem diplomové práce je porozumět mocenskému vztahu sociálního pracovníka ke klientovi. Práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání cílů, které si sociální pracovníci kladou, na mocenské prostředky, které uplatňují, a racionalizace, kterými legitimizují tyto cíle a prostředky. Teoretickými východisky jsou koncepty symbolické moci Bourdieu a pastýřské moci a „power/knowledge“ Foucaulta. Empirický výzkum byl proveden v organizacích, které se zabývají sociální prací s dětmi a mládeží. Záměrem práce je upozornit na moc v sociální práci a na nezbytnost její reflexe pracovníky.

Abstract:

The power is inseparably connected to the social work. Although it is commonly understood as something negative and bad, in Foucault´s view it is productive and indispensable. The aim of this diploma thesis is to comprehend the power relation between social worker and the client. The thesis focuses on exploration of goals of social workers, power instruments that they exercise and rationalizations that social workers use to legitimatize their goals and instruments. Bourdieu´s concept of symbolic power and Foucault´s concepts of pastoral power and „power/knowledge“ represent theoretical basis of the thesis. The empirical research was conducted in organizations that deal with social work with children and youth. The purpose of the thesis is to emphasize the issue of power in social work and the necessity of its reflection by social workers.
