Curriculum design: a means of an English language teacher professional development

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá tématem projektování kurikula jako prostředku profesního rozvoje u učitelů anglického jazyka. Úvodní teoretické kapitoly jsou zaměřeny na koncept kurikula, formy jeho existence a jeho komponenty; zvláštní pozornost je věnována kategoriím cíle a obsahu, a to z pohledu obecně didaktického i z pohledu didaktiky anglického jazyka. Následující kapitola představuje obecný rámec současných kurikulárních trendů a prezentuje některá z relevantních zjištění v oblasti kultury školy v českém vzdělávacím kontextu. Jádrem teoretické části je pak podrobnější pohled na roli učitele v kontextu kurikulární reformy, jehož vyústěním je definice našeho klíčového konceptu: projektovací kompetence. Na základě této definice jsou představeny dvě perspektivy: jak učitel projektuje a utváří kurikulum a jak akt projektování kurikula utváří samotného učitele. Empirická část představuje výsledky dlouhodobého výzkumu realizovaného u 79 začínajících učitelů anglického jazyka v přípravném období kurikulární reformy v České republice (2004-7: mezi oficiálním schválením RVP ZV a jeho povinným náběhem ve školách). Šetření je primárně založeno na kvalitativních datech a je doplněno kvantitativní analýzou; rovněž zahrnuje akčně-výzkumné aspekty. Prezentace výsledků je strukturována do několika částí: kontexty, zvládací strategie a procesy profesního rozvoje. Tato disertace jednak přináší některá zjištění o kontextu kurikulární reformy v České republice, ale rovněž nabízí některé podněty pro oblast přípravného vzdělávání učitelů.

Abstract:

This dissertation deals with the issue of curriculum design as a means of an English language teacher professional development. The initial theoretical chapters are focused on the concept of curriculum, its forms and components; special attention is paid to the categories of aim and content, both from the perspective of general didactics and ELT methodology. The following chapter introduces the general framework of current curricular trends and presents some relevant findings in the area of school culture in Czech educational context. The core of the theoretical part is then represented by a close examination of the role of teacher within the curricular reform which results in the definition of our key concept: the curriculum design competence. Based on that definition, two perspectives are being offered: how teacher designs and shapes the curriculum and how the act of designing curriculum shapes the teacher. The empirical part presents the outcomes of the long-term research carried out within the population of 79 English language novice teachers in the preparatory period of curricular reform in the Czech Republic (2004-7: between the official approval of RVP ZV and its compulsory implementation at schools). The investigation is primarily based on qualitative data and complemented by quantitative analysis; it also includes action-research aspects. The presentation of the results is structured into several parts: contexts, coping strategies and processes of professional development. The dissertation not only presents some findings about the context of curricular reform in the Czech Republic but also brings some implications for the area of pre-service teacher education.
