Transsexuals’ life stories

Abstract:

Diploma thesis „Life stories of transsexuals“ is concerned with analysing life stories of transsexuals. In both, Czech and Slovak Republic, it is the first attempt to explore this topic through lived experience of transsexuals, whatsoever. The aim of research is to understand, how transsexuals themselves construct the meaning of their lived experience. How do they construct, thorough their life, their transsexual identity? To explore this topic, narrative interview was used. To start an interview, another method was used, which is known as “life line.” Collected stories by four respondents (three of them FtM and one MtF) were analysed, using holistic-content perspective of narrative analysis. Categories of narrative reconstruction were also used, to clarify understanding of stories and to compare them. Theoretical chapter of diploma thesis is focused on defining important concepts and different perspectives, which are used thorough whole document. Theories of development of transsexual individuals are also part of theoretical chapter. These theories are later applied to results gained through analysis.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá životnými príbehmi transsexuálov. V Českej a Slovenskej republike sa jedná prvý pokus preskúmať transsexualitu prostredníctvom žitej skúsenosti samotných transsexuálov. Cieľom výskumu porozumieť tomu, ako transsexuáli konštruujú význam tejto žitej skúsenosti. Ako konštruujú v priebehu života svoju transsexuálnu identitu. K preskúmaniu tejto témy bol použitý naratívny rozhovor, ako metóda pre zahájenie rozhovoru bola použitá „čiara života“. Príbehy štyroch respondentov (traja FtM a jedna MtF) boli následne zanalyzované holisticko-obsahovou perspektívou naratívnej analýzy. K lepšiemu porovnaniu a porozumeniu jednotlivých príbehov boli použité kategórie naratívnej rekonštrukcie. Dôležitá teoretická časť práce prináša prehľad definícií pojmov, s prihliadnutím na rôzne perspektívy. Tiež obsahuje vybrané teórie vývoja transsexuálnych jedincov, získané zo zahraničných publikácií. Tieto teórie sú aplikované na výsledky analýzy.
