Technophobia and Its Influence on Modern Literature

Abstract:

Tato práce s názvem "Technofobie a ovlivnění moderní literatury" poskytne argumenty ohledně "technofobie" - strach z technologie ovlivňuje dnešní literaturu z hlediska procesu psaní, obsazích, o kterých autoři píšou a metody čtení, které dnešní obecenstvo využívá. Technologie a technofobie představily možnou budoucnost, ve které je lidstvo vyhubeno nebo potlačeno vlastními výtvory. Hlavním cílem této práce je zanalyzování textů spisovatelů, jako jsou Jean Baudrillard, nebo Philip K. Dick, a představení jejich úhlů pohledu na technologii, jak v upřímných názorech, tak i v alegorických fiktivních příbězích, které navazují k této úzkostlivosti a znechucení vůči technologii, a jak je to ironicky ovlivňuje v průběhu psaní. Zanalyzují se jejich práce a jejich spojitosti s technologií, a prodiskutuje, jak toto téma ovlivňuje dnešní čtenáře, jelikož jsou fyzické kopie s vzrůstajícím digitálním věkem postupně nahrazeny e-knihami apod. Mimo toho je i nezbytné se zaměřit na to, jak má technologie celkový účinek pro naši společnost v dnešním věku, jelikož se postupně rozvíjí do digitálního světa; tzv. dystopii nebo spíše anti-utopii, o které autoři s technofobií diskutují ve svých pracích. Tato práce prodiskutuje vliv technologie na literární akademie a důvod, proč mají dnešní učitelé potíže to zahrnout ve studijních materiálech. Tato práce také využije analýzy literárních děl (jak spisovatelé přistupují k tématu) a jaké vlastnosti technické pokroky jsou vynechány z moderních textů.

Abstract:

This thesis titled "Technophobia and Its Influence on Modern Literature" will provide arguments that "technophobia" - the fear of technology, influences modern literature in relation to the writing process, the content authors choose to depict, and the approach today's audiences go for in terms of reading it. Technology and technophobia have introduced the possibility of a form of a takeover, whereby humanity is exterminated or suppressed by our own creations. The main goal of this paper is to analyze fiction and literary critical texts of writers, such as Jean Baudrillard or Philip K. Dick, and to present their point of views on technology in both their reviews and allegorical fictional stories that allude to the anxiety and distaste for technology, and how it ironically impacts them in terms of writing it as well. The thesis seeks to analyze these works and how they connect to the conceptualization of technology, thereby discussing how the subject matter influences today's readers with the rise of the Digital World, which has been replacing printed material with e-books and how it influences the publishing industry etc. Furthermore, it is vital to consider how technology generally impacts our society in the Holocene era, since the natural world progressively shapes into the digital world; a dystopian, anti-utopian setting, which technophobic authors debate in their work. This thesis will discuss how technology influences writing in schools and the reasons academics employ to include it in their syllabus material. The thesis also utilizes a sustained analysis of literary content (how authors approach the topic) and what attributes modern literature lacks in terms of dealing with the nova presented by technological advancement.
