Awareness of the General Public about Midwifery Profession

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zmapovat míru povědomí laické veřejnosti o profesi porodní asistentka. Dílčí cíle se zaměřovaly na míru povědomí laické veřejnosti o profesi porodní asistentka v závislosti na pohlaví, věku a nejvyšším absolvovaném vzdělání respondentů. Metodika: Sběr dat v rámci kvantitativního šetření probíhal pomocí dotazníku, který byl rozšířen v elektronické formě. Analýza výsledků byla provedena v aplikaci, pomocí které byl rozšiřován dotazník a následně byly tyto výsledky zpracovány spolu s tabulkovým a grafickým znázorněním v programu Microsoft Word. Výsledky: Z výsledků průzkumu je zřejmé, že populace má povědomí hlavně o tom, že je porodní asistentka osoba, která je spjata zejména se samotným porodem. Nízké povědomí o pojmu porodní asistentka bylo z televize, školy a internetu. Zkoumaní respondenti měli mylné znalosti o tomto oboru, o kterém se domnívají, že je lékařský. Většina zkoumané populace ví, že studium probíhá na vysoké škole. Nízké povědomí bylo o kompetencích tykajících se péče v těhotenství, nástřihu hráze a ošetření porodního poranění. Dále také o kompetencích péče o novorozence a péče o ženy na gynekologickém úseku. Dotázaní respondenti by na těchto odděleních porodní asistentku neočekávali. Zkoumaná populace se domnívá, že porodní asistentka může vést fyziologický porod v nemocnici samostatně, výjimkou jsou muži a absolventi základní školy. Respondenti mají povědomí, že jsou v České republice organizace sdružující porodní asistentky, avšak převážně neznají žádnou konkrétní. Většina respondentů neznala jiný název pro porodní asistentku. Nejčastěji byl napsán výraz "dula". Závěr: Z vyhodnocených výsledků v práci by bylo vhodné edukovat respondenty v kategoriích, ve kterých měli mylné znalosti.

Abstract:

Aims: The aim of the bachelor thesis was to map the level of awareness of the lay public about the midwife profession. The specific aims focused on the level of awareness of the lay public about the midwife profession, in relation to gender, age and highest completed education of the respondents. Methodology: Data collection within the quantitative survey was carried out using a questionnaire, which was distributed in electronic form. The analysis of the results was performed in an application, which was used to distribute the questionnaire. These results were then processed together with tabular and graphical representation in Microsoft Word. Results: The results of the survey show that the general public is aware for the most part that a midwife is a person who is mainly associated with the birth itself. Low awareness of the term 'midwife' was attained from television, schools and the Internet. The respondents were misinformed regarding this field, which they believe to be medical. The general public knows for the most part that education is conducted at a university level. Furthermore, there was little awareness of competencies related to pregnancy care, episiotomy and birth injury treatment. This is also true for the competencies of caring for newborns and care of women in the gynaecological department. The respondents would not expect a midwife in these departments. The general public believes that a midwife can be in charge of a physiological birth in the hospital on her own, apart from men and primary school graduates. The respondents are aware that there are organizations in the Czech Republic that associate midwives, but they are mostly not aware of any specific ones. Most respondents did not know another term for a midwife. The term 'doula' was mentioned most often. Conclusion: From the evaluated results in this work, it would be appropriate to educate the respondents in the categories in which misconception prevailed.
