Mechanisms of family representation in lifestyle magazines

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá mechanismy reprezentace rodiny v lifestylových časopisech VLASTA a COSMOPOLITAN, které byly za tímto účelem vybrány záměrně, neboť se orientují na odlišné socioekonomické vrstvy čtenářů. Prostřednictvím metod interpretativního čtení a obsahové analýzy se pokouší zjistit, jakými způsoby je rodina v českých médiích prezentována, jakých významů tento mediální obraz nabývá, jak se vzájemně odlišuje ve srovnávaných médiích a jaké mýty a stereotypy si s sebou toto zobrazení nese. V kvantitativním oddílu empirické části práce ověřuje především frekvence výskytu jednotlivých forem soužití, četnost pozitivních a negativních zmínek, jež se s nimi pojí a frekvenci kontextů (rodinný život, profesní život, veřejná sféra), do nichž jsou žena a muž zasazováni. V kvalitativním celku se pak zabývá podobou a šíří diskurzu, jenž se kolem fenoménu rodiny utvořil. Analýzám podrobuje jak samotný text, tak fotografický materiál, v případě kvalitativního zkoumání se však zaměřuje výhradně na text.

Abstract:

The presented thesis deal with the mechanisms of family representation in the lifestyle magazines VLASTA and COSMOPOLITAN, which were chosen for the purpose mentioned, because they focus on different socioeconomic oriented readers. Using the methods of interpretative reading and content analysis the thesis try to find out, how the family is being presented in the Czech media, what meanings this representation has, how it differs considering the different typology of the compared media and what myths and stereotypes it entails. In the quantitative part of the empirical design the thesis test especially the frequencies of the single family forms, the count of the positive as well as the negative remarks dealing with the different family models and the frequency of the contexts (family life, profession life, public sphere), in which women and men are being showed. In the qualitative part the thesis study the shape and the width of the family discourse. The quantitative part analyses the text itself as well as the photos, however, in the case of the qualitative part only text is being investigated.
