Tuning in: Dealing with Music in a „Problematic District“

Abstract:

Táto magisterská diplomová práca si dáva za cieľ vyvinúť porozumenie rozličným významom, ktoré sa hudbe prikladajú v špecifickej štvrti Brno-Zábrdovice. Hlavnou metódou sú etnografia a rozhovorov. Mikro level fenomenologického vysvetlenia sústrediaceho sa na každodenné konanie ukazuje umiestnenie a vtelenie hudobného prežívania. Príbehy spomínania a súčastních obmedzení v hudobnej produkcii sú prezentované s prízvukom na právne limitácie hudobnej produkcie. Tento výskum je zasadený do habermasovského rámca verejnej sféry, ako aj do teórie integrácie Jeffrey Alexandra. Hudba by sa v tomto prípadne mohla stať nástrojom emancipácie, ale vo všeobecnosti sú postoje obyvateľov pasívne, vyjadrujú pocit bezmoci a poukazujú na pocit vylúčenia.

Abstract:

This work develops an outline of diverse meanings understood by local people and structures in a specific city district in Brno-Zábrdovice. Main methods of research are ethnographic method and interviews. The micro level of phenomenological explanation concerning everyday practices is presented. It mostly discusses emplacement and embodiment of music experience. General narratives of the memory and current restrictions in music production are presented with an emphasis on legal limitations to music reproduction. The study is set into the Habermasian theoretical frame of public sphere as well as Jeffrey Alexander's theory of integration. Music in this case might become a tool for emancipation but in general, the attitudes of most of the inhabitants are rather passive, expressing the feeling of powerlessness pointing at feeling of exclusion.
