Parent-Child Communication on the Topic of Death of the Other Parent

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá komunikací mezi rodičem a dítětem na téma úmrtí druhého z rodičů a průběhem truchlení v rodinách po ztrátě rodiče a partnera. V teoretické části jsme se věnovali dětskému chápání smrti a faktorům, které jej mohou ovlivnit. Dále jsme se zaměřili na komunikaci na téma smrti v rodinách, na dětské reakce v truchlení, na možné dopady úmrtí rodiče na děti a na fungování rodiny. Na konci teoretické části se také věnujeme formám podpory, které mohou pomáhat dětem ve zvládání truchlení. Byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkumný design. Sběr dat proběhl skrze polostrukturované rozhovory se čtyřmi rodiči, kteří se svými dětmi komunikovali o úmrtí druhého rodiče. Rozhovory byly analyzovány pomocí tematické analýzy. Identifikovali jsme pět hlavních témat, kterými jsou: „Přístup ke komunikaci,“ „Faktory ovlivňující komunikaci,“ „Truchlení,“ „Dopady na děti“ a „Podpora pro děti a pro rodinu.“ Výsledky jsou zasazeny do kontextu předchozích výzkumů. Jsou prezentovány limity studie i další možné směřování výzkumu.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis focuses on parent-child communication regarding the death of one of the parents and on the grieving process within families after loss of a parent or partner. In the theoretical part we explored children’s understanding of death and the factors that can influence it. Then we focused on communication about death within families, children’s reactions during mourning, on potential impacts of parental death on children and family functioning. At last we also address forms of support that can assist children in coping with grief. A qualitative research design was chosen. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with four parents who had communicated with their children about death of the other parent. Interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. We identified five major themes which are: “Approach to Communication,” “Factors Influencing Communication,” “Grieving,” “Impacts on Children” and “Support for Children and Families.” The results are discussed in the context of previous research. Limits of the study and further possible research directions are presented.
