Explicitation and Implicitation in Non-literary Translations

Abstract:

Diplomová práce poskytuje empirická data pro výzkum překladových univerzálií, zejména překladově inherentní explicitace a implicitace. Tyto koncepty jsou v práci chápány jako posuny vznikající při překladu do cílového jazyka, tzv. S univerzálie. Na materiálu paralelního korpusu sestaveného ze čtyř úryvků knih populárně naučené literatury a jejich překladů z per dvou českých překladatelů, Antonína Hradilka a Antona Markoše, byla zkoumána následující hypotéza: využití překladově inherentní explicitace se řídí normou, zatímco využití překladově inherentní implicitace záleží na individuálním rozhodnutí překladatele. Data získaná analýzou výskytů překladově inherentní explicitace a implicitace v jednotlivých překladech tuto hypotézu potvrzují. Postoj obou překladatelů k explicitaci je víceméně srovnatelný, počtem použitých implicitací však Markošovy texty převyšují Hradilkovy. Jednotlivé výskyty překladově inherentní explicitace a implicitace byly rozděleny do kategorií podle toho, jaký typ významu byl explicitován/implicitován. Cílem bylo zjistit, které významy stojí v centru daných univerzálií a které na jejich periferii. Dělení vychází z klasifikace M. A. K. Hallidaye, jež vymezuje čtyři druhy jazykových funkcí (významů): zkušenostní, logická, textová a interpersonální. Data ukazují, že v centru překladově inherentní explicitace a implicitace stojí explicitace a implicitace prvků majících zkušenostní či textovou funkci. V jednotlivých překladech je však možné nalézt i nemalé množství výskytů, jejichž klasifikace činí obtíže, stanovit například hranice mezi textovou překladově inherentní implicitací a textovou implicitací fakultativní či simplifikací na úrovni stylu a normalizací není snadné.

Abstract:

The present diploma thesis is a contribution to the empirical, or rather observational research related to translation universals, translation-inherent explicitation and implicitation as S-universals, in particular. With the help of a parallel corpus consisting of four extracts from popular science literature books and their translations by two Czech translators—Antonín Hradilek and Anton Markoš—the following hypothesis is tested: The level of translation-inherent explicitation is governed by the norm, whereas the level of translation-inherent implicitation depends on the individual translator’s decision. The data received through the analysis of occurrences of translation-inherent explicitation and implicitation in individual target texts provides evidence that supports the hypothesis. The two translators’ attitudes towards explicitation are more or less the same, whereas the greater number of instances of implicitation can be found in the translations by Markoš. The individual occurrences of translation-inherent explicitation and implicitation were categorized according to the type of meaning that was explicitated/implicitated in order to find out explicitations/implicitations of which meanings form the centres and peripheries of the individual universals. The Hallidayian framework that delimits four basic types of functions (meanings)—experiential, logical, textual and interpersonal—was made use of. The research showed that explicitation and implicitation of experiential and textual meanings seem to form the centre of translation-inherent explicitation and implicitation. In many cases, however, boundaries are difficult to set, e.g. the boundary between textual translation-inherent and textual optional implicitation or stylistic simplification and normalization.
