The Strong Black Woman Schema in Contemporary African American Women's Literature

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje dvě knihy současných afroamerických spisovatelek Tayari Jones a Jacqueline Woodson. Jejich díla, jmenovitě An American Marriage a Red at the Bone, pojednávají o životě afroameričanek a jejich zkušenostech se životem v současných Spojených státech amerických. Obě knihy se zabývají sebevědomými ženami motivovanými k úspěchu, které se musí vypořádat se situacemi, které jim změní život a které mají ještě větší dopad, protože jsou spojeny s jejich rasou. Cílem této práce je propojit fiktivní ženské postavy se stávajícím schématem “Strong Black Woman” a analyzovat způsoby, jakými se tyto postavy podobají tomuto stereotypu, a také důsledky schématu, které narativy románů naznačují. Jednotlivé analyzované knihy a jejich ženské postavy jsou srovnávány s typickými charakteristikami “Strong Black Woman” – tyto charakteristiky vycházejí z výzkumů psychologie, sociologie, afroamerických studií a kulturních studií. Pomocí srovnávací analýzy a podrobného čtení práce staví do kontrastu postoje knih ke schématu i dopady, které knihy ze schématu vyvozují, a zda naznačují nový přístup k pojetí síly a kladných vlastností afroamerických žen. Na závěr práce ukazuje, v čem se liší přístupy knih a jejich možný vliv na celé schéma i na afroamerické ženy.

Abstract:

The present thesis analyzes two books by contemporary African American women writers, Tayari Jones and Jacqueline Woodson. Their works, namely An Amer-ican Marriage and Red at the Bone, deal with the lives of African American women and their experience of living in the contemporary United States of America. Both books are concerned with confident, success-motivated women who have to deal with life-changing situations that have an even greater impact as they are connected to their race. The aim of this thesis is to connect the fictional female characters to the existing Strong Black Woman schema and to analyze ways in which they resemble this trope as well as the aftermaths of the schema the narratives of the novels sug-gest. The books, analyzed respectively, and their female characters are compared to the typical characteristics of the Strong Black Woman – these characteristics are based on research in psychology, sociology, African American studies and cultural studies. Using a comparative analysis and close reading the thesis contrasts the books’ stances towards the schema as well as the impacts the narratives deduce from the trope and whether they suggest a new approach towards the idea of strength and virtue of African American women. Finally, the thesis highlights in what ways the approaches of the books differ and their possible effect on the whole sche-ma as well as African American women.
