Lost in translation: translation equivalents of modal particles and sentence adverbials in the parallel translation corpus InterCorp.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with Czech and English sentence adverbials/modal particles and their translation equivalents in the parallel corpus InterCorp. The examined expressions are studied with consideration of their potential function as epistemic and evidential markers. The theoretical part introduces the concepts of epistemic modality and evidentiality, their relation and means of realisation. The next chapter defines the groups of words of sentence adverbials and modal particles. Following part is dedicated to corpus linguistics, especially parallel corpora and the corpus InterCorp. The last theoretical part describes the method used in the analysis. The practical part of the thesis includes the analysis of selected expressions and their translation equivalents. The study is performed on a sample of sentences from the genre of journalistic texts retrieved from the InterCorp corpus. The translation equivalents as well as the cases where there is no equivalent are identified in this part of the thesis. The results are interpreted and evaluated with consideration of evidential and epistemic qualities of the examined expressions.

Diplomová práce zkoumá česká a anglická větná adverbia/modální částice a jejich překladové ekvivalenty skrze paralelní korpus InterCorp a nahlíží na ně z hlediska jejich potenciální epistemické nebo evidenciální funkce. Teoretická část práce představuje koncepty epistemické modality a evidenciality, jejich vztah a způsoby vyjádření. Dále jsou v této části definovány skupiny slov větných adverbií a modálních částic. Následující teoretická kapitola se věnuje korpusové lingvistice, zejména pak paralelním korpusům a korpusu InterCorp. Poslední kapitola před samotnou analýzou popisuje metodu, kterou je analýza provedena. V praktické části práce je provedena analýza vybraných výrazů a jejich překladových ekvivalentů. Vzorek vět, na kterých byl výzkum proveden, byl vybrán z publicistických textů v rámci překladového paralelního korpusu InterCorp. V této části práce jsou identifikovány překladové ekvivalenty zkoumaných výrazů včetně případů, kdy ekvivalent chybí. Výsledky jsou okomentovány a vyhodnoceny z hlediska epistemických a evidenciálních kvalit výrazů.
