Social construction of the Romani identity in the recent Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tématem předložené práce je sociální konstrukce romské identity v České republice. Hlavním cílem práce je přitom postihnout stěžejní mechanismy utváření romské identity s využitím sociologie vědění P. L. Bergera a T. Luckmanna. Úvodem se práce zabývá některými důsledky globalizace na národní stát coby určující kontext formování identit, aby posléze zaměřila pozornost na české národní sebepojetí, jež má na konstrukci romské identity zásadní vliv. Práce zkoumá, zda je romská identita v českých podmínkách identitou volenou a sleduje, nakolik jsou v dominantních osnovách nacionalistického diskurzu sociální definice „romství“ produkovány jako odvrácená strana „češství“. V konstruktivistickém paradigmatu se práce následně věnuje společenské zásobě vědění o Romech a její institucionální distribuci, s důrazem na vědění preteoretické, v němž je objektivováno, co „každý Čech o Romech ví“. Přínosem z dílny Bergera a Luckmanna může být také koncept víceúrovňové legitimizace, který objasňuje, jak jsou v českých podmínkách vysvětlovány a ospravedlňovány jednotlivé vytěsňující praktiky, jež vedou k společenské marginalizaci Romů. Závěrem si práce klade otázku po původu zvěcnění romské identity a s orientací k ideálnímu horizontu integrace nastiňuje některé z prerekvizit, které podmiňují jeho dosažení.

Abstract:

The topic of the presented thesis addresses the social construction of the Romani identity in the Czech Republic. The main objective of the thesis is to describe, using the sociology of knowledge by P.L. Berger and T. Luckmann, the fundamental mechanisms of how the Romani identity is shaped. The thesis opens with some consequences of globalization on the national state as a backdrop against which identities are shaped, then it looks at the Czech national self-concept which has a major impact on the construction of the Romani identity. The thesis investigates whether the Romani identity in the Czech conditions is a chosen identity and observes to what degree the social definition of the "Romani identity" is in the predominant nationalist discourse the reverse side of the "Czech identity". Based on the constructivist paradigm, the thesis deals with the societal stock of knowledge about the Romani people and the institutionalised distribution thereof, with an emphasis on pre-theoretical knowledge, in which "what every Czech knows about the Romani people" becomes objectivised. The concept of multi-level legitimisation by Berger and Luckmann can be of use. It explains how particular exclusive approaches, resulting in the societal marginalisation of the Romani people, are explained and justified in the Czech context. Finally, the thesis raises the question whether and how – if the integration is to be reached – reification of the Romani identity can become overcome.
