Psychological factors in the treatment of overweight and obesity

Abstract:

Thesis deals with influence of psychological factors on treatment of obesity and overweight. The first part of the thesis includes the latest knowledge on obesity, describes individual types and causes of obesity and options of its therapy. Selected psychological factors as motivation, life satisfaction, self-efficacy and locus of control are theoretically based in another part of the work followed by application of these concepts on the therapy of obesity and overweight. Empirical part describes a research that took place in nutritional consulting rooms and was made using questionnaires on a sample of 51 persons whose BMI value was over 25. Influence of selected psychological factors on weight loss of patients was observed. The data were analysed with Spearman´s correlation coefficient and a step regress analysis with a result that higher weight loss was observed at those patients who were motivated to reduce their weight by health reasons and at patients who had higher score on the scale of locus of control – internality.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá vplyvom psychologických faktorov na liečbu nadváhy a obezity. Prvá časť práce zhrňuje najnovšie poznatky z oblasti obezity, popisuje jednotlivé typy a príčiny obezity a možnosti jej liečby. Vybrané psychologické faktory ako je motivácia, životná spokojnosť, vedomie vlastnej účinnosti a locus of control sú teoreticky zakotvené v ďalšej časti práce s následnou aplikáciou týchto konceptov na liečbu nadváhy a obezity. Empirická časť popisuje výskum, ktorý prebehol v nutričný poradniach dotazníkovým šetrením na vzorke 51 osôb s hodnotou BMI nad 25. Sledoval sa vplyv vybraných psychologických faktorov na váhový úbytok pacientov. Údaje boli analyzované Spearmanovým korelačným koeficientom a krokovou regresnou analýzou s výsledkom, že vyšší váhový úbytok bol pozorovaný u pacientov, ktorí boli motivovaní k redukcii hmotnosti zdravotnými dôvodmi a u pacientov, ktorí skórovali vyššie na škále locus of control – internalita.
