Music perception in connection with its emotional effect

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá souvislost mezi kognitivními styly vnímání hudby a emočními reakcemi, které může hudba vyvolávat. Pozornost je především věnována možnému působení interindividuálních rozdílů během hudebního vnímání, kterými jsou pohlaví, kognitivní styly vnímání hudby, hudební empatizace (ME) a systemizace (MS) a úroveň hudební aktivity. Teoretická část se zaměřuje na pojetí hudby a emocí z pohledu hudební psychologie, také na samotný proces vnímání hudby a vznik emocionálních reakcí či hudebních emocí, a snaží se o jejich vzájemné propojení v souvislosti s dosavadními zahraničními výzkumy. Pro realizaci výzkumu bylo vytvořeno 9 hudebních nahrávek dvěma hudebníky na akustickou kytaru a violoncello, které byly hodnoceny účastníky výzkumu (n=226) pomocí Ženevské Škály Hudebních Emocí (GEMS-9). K měření kognitivních stylů vnímání hudby byla použita Škála Hudební Empatizace a Systemizace (MES). U ME a MS byl pozorován signifikantní vliv pohlaví a úrovně hudební aktivity. Byla také zjištěna signifikantní středně silná pozitivní souvislost mezi faktory hudební empatizace a systemizace a emočním působením hudby, ta se však s rostoucí úrovní hudební aktivity zpravidla snižovala. Zatímco muži vykazovali signifikantně vyšší míru MS než ženy, u žen nebyla signifikantně vyšší míra ME prokázána. Co se celkového emočního působení týče, mezi muži a ženami, hudebníky a nehudebníky, nebyly žádné signifikantní rozdíly zaznamenány.

Abstract:

The present thesis investigates a connection between the cognitive styles of music perception and emotional reactions which music may induce. Furthermore, possible interindividual differences such as sex, cognitive styles of music percetion, music empathizing (ME) and music systemizing (MS) and music performance experience are both observed and examined. The theoretical part is mainly focused on the concepts of music and emotion from the music psychology perspective and also on the procces of the music perception itself as well as on the musically induced emotions with main effort to interconnect the wide spectrum of the knowledge with the up to date research. Nine music excerpts were created by two musicians with the acousting guitar and violoncello, which were rated by the participants (n = 226) using the self-report Geneva Emotional Music Scale (GEMS-9). The Music Empathizing-Systemizing Scale (MES) was used to measure the cognitive styles of music perception and listening. Significant effects of sex and music performance experience were observed within the ME and MS. Significant moderate positive correlation between the factors ME and MS and emotional effect was also observed which, nevertheless, with an increasing level of music performance experience usually decreased. While males scored significantly higher on the music systemizing then females, there was no significantly higher ME rate observed in females. As far as the overall emotional effect is concerned, there was no significant difference between the males and females observed as well as between the musicians and nonmusicians.
