Perception and emotional experience in sight-reading violinists

Abstract:

Účelem práce je kvalitativní zkoumání faktorů, které mohou ovlivňovat čtení not z listu (sight-reading) houslistů, a to metodou mnohopřípadové studie. Téma sight-readingu není příliš prozkoumané, zvláště pak z psychologického úhlu pohledu. Teoretický rámec je často nejednotný a neucelený. Výzkum potenciálních faktorů provádím primárně v nevýkonových oblastech – vnímání a emočního prožívání houslistů. Na jejich možný vliv je v dostupné literatuře poukazováno, nicméně jim není věnováno dostatek pozornosti. Součástí samotného výzkumu je měření úspěšnosti sight-readingu (sight-readingová úloha a následná expertní analýza záznamu), kvalitativní rozhovory (týkající se primárně témat vnímání a emočního prožívání), testování kognitivního stylu (CFT1) a rysů osobnosti (BFI-2). Kvalitativní data jsou zpracována pomocí obsahové analýzy a závěrečná, integrující analýza všech získaných dat je komparativní. Vzhledem k povaze získaných dat nelze prezentovat výsledky jako zobecnitelné poznatky, nicméně je možné vytvořit hypotézy o vztahu vnímání i emočního prožívání se sight-readingem houslistů. Ten se jeví být spojen s vnímáním i emočním prožíváním jak po stránce způsobu, stylu a strategií čtení not, tak po stránce úspěchu v sight-readingové úloze. Výsledky této práce mohou poskytnout vhled do komplexní problematiky sight-readingu a také posloužit jako výchozí bod pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to qualitatively investigate the factors that may influence sight-reading of violinists using a multiple-case study method. The topic of sight-reading is not well researched, especially from a psychological point of view. The theoretical framework is often inconsistent and disjointed. Research on potential factors is primarily conducted in non-performance domains – the perceptual and emotional experience of violinists. Their potential influence has been pointed out in the available literature, but not enough attention has been paid to them. The research conducted in this thesis includes measures of sight-reading success (sight-reading task and subsequent expert analysis of the recordings), qualitative interviews (relating primarily to the themes of perception and emotional experience), testing of cognitive style (CFT1) and personality traits (BFI-2). The qualitative data are processed using the method of content analysis, and the final, integrative analysis of all the data is comparative. Due to the nature of the data obtained, the results cannot be presented as generalizable findings; however, it is possible to form hypotheses about the relationship of both perceptual and emotional experience with sight-reading in violinists. The latter appears to be related to both perception and emotional experience in terms of the manner, style and strategies of reading music, as well as success in the sight-reading task. The results of this work can provide insight into the complex issue of sight-editing and also serve as a starting point for further research.
